According to Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals remain focused on finding a trade partner for third baseman Nolan Arenado. Worthy noted that moving the gold glover is priority "1, 2, and 3" for president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Arenado's name has been around several trade discussions throughout the offseason. The Astros reportedly sent the Cardinals a package, but Arenado vetoed the deal. The New York Yankees have also had discussions about acquiring the third baseman. The Cardinals are trying to clear salaries off their payroll to open opportunities for their younger players to have roles in the 2025 season. Starting pitchers Erick Fedde and Steven Matz have also been on the trade block, according to sources. Last season, Arenado posted a .272/.325/.394 line with 16 home runs but remains an elite defender despite his declining bat.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports that the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers are options for third baseman Nolan Arenado if the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox can't reach an agreement on a trade package. After nixing a potential trade from the Cardinals to the Houston Astros earlier this offseason, Moroso also reports that Arenado has been more "open-minded" about waiving his full no-trade clause to more teams in the last 24 hours. In addition to Arenado, both the Red Sox and Tigers have been mentioned as suitors for free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, who remains on the open market. The 33-year-old Arenado has seen his offensive numbers dip in recent seasons, but he's still a well above-average defender at the hot corner. He's apparently open to moving across the diamond to first base, but that's unlikely to happen if he is traded to either Boston or Detroit.
According to a source, the Boston Red Sox have emerged as a strong candidate to land third baseman Nolan Arenado in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason. It comes as Boston could be close to abandoning their efforts for free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, who could command a deal worth $200 million on the open market. Arenado is owed $74 million over the next three years and has a full no-trade clause, but he's informed the Cardinals he's willing to waive it to go to Fenway Park, a place that could help him get some of his power back. Arenado already blocked a potential trade to the Houston Astros this winter. Boston shortstop Trevor Story, who played with Arenado from 2016-20 in Colorado, has been selling Arenado on Boston in recent weeks. If a deal is to happen, St. Louis might need to eat more money than they'd like while also potentially getting first baseman Triston Casas in return.
