Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) is throwing at 120 feet on Thursday and Friday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. Pivetta is on the 15-day injured list due to a right-elbow sprain, and while he's making progress in his throwing program, he still has a ways to go and will eventually need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to Boston's starting rotation. Fantasy managers definitely shouldn't expect the 31-year-old to make it back before the calendar flips to May, but Pivetta should be stashed after looking excellent in his first two starts of 2024. He allowed just one earned run on eight hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out 13 in 11 innings pitched for a 0.82 ERA.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta (elbow) is going to test his arm and play catch on Saturday. After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow on Tuesday, it's encouraging to hear he's ready to resume throwing. The 31-year-old right-hander was off to a spectacular start before the Red Sox shut him down, striking out 13 over 11 innings while surrendering only one run and one walk in two starts. Pivetta has a chance to return before April ends, but it remains to be seen if he'll require a rehab assignment before doing so. It's unclear who will join the club's rotation in the interim, as Boston still hasn't formally listed a probable pitcher for Saturday's matchup versus the visiting Los Angeles Angels, so there isn't a clear fantasy beneficiary of Pivetta's absence.
Boston Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow said that right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) has a "mild strain" of the flexor tendon in his right arm and could return from the 15-day injured list when he's eligible. The Red Sox wanted to take advantage of the early season schedule to give Pivetta some time off. The 31-year-old is going to miss the next two weeks, but fantasy managers that have him rostered need to keep him in an IL spot until he returns. Pivetta has been excellent in the early going, allowing only an earned run on a solo home run while walking one and fanning 13 in 11 innings over his first two starts in 2024. It's unknown who will take his rotation spot in the short term, with Cooper Criswell, Chase Anderson and Josh Winckowski all being candidates for a few spots starts.
The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Nick Pivetta (forearm) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) on Tuesday due to a flexor strain and recalled left-hander Brennan Bernardino from the minors in a corresponding move. It's tough news for the Red Sox and Pivetta, who had given up just one run with 13 strikeouts and only one walk in 11 innings over his first two starts of the season. Hopefully, he'll only be away from the team for the minimum amount of time, but flexor-tendon injuries can end up being pretty serious. Bernardino will give the Red Sox another left-handed arm in the bullpen. It's unclear who will replace Pivetta in Boston's starting rotation, but names like Josh Winckowski, Cooper Criswell and Chase Anderson could all be options. Stay tuned for more information.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta helped his team complete a series sweep in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Oakland Athletics, hurling five scoreless innings on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. After being saddled with a tough-luck loss in last Friday's 1-0 defeat to the Seattle Mariners, Pivetta contributed to the second shutout victory of Boston's season. On top of that, the 31-year-old Canadian right-hander is now undefeated with a shiny 0.71 ERA and 44 strikeouts in six career appearances against Oakland. Pivetta will take a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 13 punchouts over 11 frames in 2024 into a difficult matchup versus the division-rival Baltimore Orioles and ace Corbin Burnes next Wednesday. Over 23 innings against the O's since 2022, Pivetta owns a 2.35 ERA and 29 strikeouts.
