Boston Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow said that right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) has a "mild strain" of the flexor tendon in his right arm and could return from the 15-day injured list when he's eligible. The Red Sox wanted to take advantage of the early season schedule to give Pivetta some time off. The 31-year-old is going to miss the next two weeks, but fantasy managers that have him rostered need to keep him in an IL spot until he returns. Pivetta has been excellent in the early going, allowing only an earned run on a solo home run while walking one and fanning 13 in 11 innings over his first two starts in 2024. It's unknown who will take his rotation spot in the short term, with Cooper Criswell, Chase Anderson and Josh Winckowski all being candidates for a few spots starts.
The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Nick Pivetta (forearm) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 6) on Tuesday due to a flexor strain and recalled left-hander Brennan Bernardino from the minors in a corresponding move. It's tough news for the Red Sox and Pivetta, who had given up just one run with 13 strikeouts and only one walk in 11 innings over his first two starts of the season. Hopefully, he'll only be away from the team for the minimum amount of time, but flexor-tendon injuries can end up being pretty serious. Bernardino will give the Red Sox another left-handed arm in the bullpen. It's unclear who will replace Pivetta in Boston's starting rotation, but names like Josh Winckowski, Cooper Criswell and Chase Anderson could all be options. Stay tuned for more information.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta helped his team complete a series sweep in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Oakland Athletics, hurling five scoreless innings on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. After being saddled with a tough-luck loss in last Friday's 1-0 defeat to the Seattle Mariners, Pivetta contributed to the second shutout victory of Boston's season. On top of that, the 31-year-old Canadian right-hander is now undefeated with a shiny 0.71 ERA and 44 strikeouts in six career appearances against Oakland. Pivetta will take a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 13 punchouts over 11 frames in 2024 into a difficult matchup versus the division-rival Baltimore Orioles and ace Corbin Burnes next Wednesday. Over 23 innings against the O's since 2022, Pivetta owns a 2.35 ERA and 29 strikeouts.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Pivetta pitched as a starter and reliever in 2023 but appears to be a lock for the Opening Day starting rotation this year. The 31-year-old Canadian finished his year strong and ultimately went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA (3.96 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, one save, 50 walks and 183 strikeouts in 142 2/3 innings over 38 appearances (16 starts). Fantasy managers should have reservations about him in a starting role, though, after he had a 4.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 29 walks and 105 strikeouts in his 16 starts. Going deep into games could be an issue as well. At best, consider Pivetta as an option to fill out your starting rotation in deep-mixed leagues.
