Nick Madrigal To Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Likely Out For The Season

New York Mets second baseman Nick Madrigal (shoulder) will undergo surgery on his shoulder and will likely miss the entire 2025 campaign. Madrigal signed a one-year deal with the Mets worth $1.35 million earlier in the offseason. During the early part of spring training, Madrigal exited a contest after taking a hard fall on his shoulder. He was later diagnosed with a fractured shoulder and was shifted to the 60-day IL. As a result, fantasy managers should expect infield prospect Luisangel Acuna to see significant opportunities during camp and will have an excellent opportunity to make the Opening Day roster. Acuna received a brief 14-game stint in the majors last season and held a .308/.325/.641 line with two doubles and three home runs. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progression during camp as he could earn a more significant role at the keystone alongside Jeff McNeil.

Nick Madrigal Placed On 60-Day Injured List

The New York Mets have placed second baseman Nick Madrigal (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list. This transaction opened a spot on the roster for outfielder Alexander Canario, who the team acquired in a trade from the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Madrigal suffered a fractured shoulder during Sunday's spring training contest. He was initially diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder, but testing revealed further damage. As a result, fantasy managers should expect Madrigal to be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Earlier in the offseason, the infielder signed a one-year contract with the Mets to serve as depth infielder. With Madrigal sidelined, fantasy managers should expect infield prospect Luisangel Acuna to be given significant opportunity during camp to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. During his brief at the majors last season, he held a .308/.325/.641 line across 14 contests.

Nick Madrigal Suffers Fractured Shoulder

The New York Mets announced on Monday that infielder Nick Madrigal (shoulder) fractured his left shoulder when he dislocated it during Sunday's Grapefruit League game. According to manager Carlos Mendoza, Madrigal will be "out for a long time." The injuries are already mounting for the Mets early in spring training, with starting pitchers Frankie Montas (lat) and Sean Manaea (oblique) also expected to miss Opening Day in late March. Madrigal was an early favorite to win a bench spot in his first season with the Mets, but now he'll start the year on the injured list. His injury will open up opportunities for Luisangel Acuna, Brett Baty, Donovan Walton, Jared Young and Luis De Los Santos to compete for a utility role in spring training. Madrigal, a first-rounder by the White Sox in 2018, didn't really have any fantasy value in mixed leagues to begin with heading into the 2025 season.
