Max Scherzer Drawing Interest From Toronto

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet, free-agent pitcher Max Scherzer is drawing interest from the Toronto Blue Jays. Nicholson-Smith noted that while Scherzer is already drawing interest from the Blue Jays, adding another top bat from the market, such as Anthony Santander or Pete Alonso, could create an even more appealing destination for the 40-year-old. Last season, Scherzer was limited to just 43 1/3 innings of work due to numerous injuries. The right-hander posted a 3.95 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP through this small stint. He struck out 40 batters and held a strong 5.6% walk rate. He generated hard contact at a solid 34.9% rate and whiffs at a 29.2% rate. The Blue Jays were very interested in adding Roki Sasaki to their starting rotation but fell just short in the bidding. If Scherzer were to join the Blue Jays, this would likely move Yariel Rodriguez to a long-relief role.

Max Scherzer Wants To Remain A Starter

According to Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer wants to continue to be deployed out of a starting rotation during the 2025 season. Morosi noted that some sources suggested that clubs viewed Scherzer as a potential closer, but people close to Scherzer made it clear that he intends to remain a starter. The 40-year-old was limited to just 43 1/3 innings of work last season due to numerous injuries to his back, arm, and hamstring. However, earlier this offseason, Scherzer noted that a healthy offseason would set him up well for success in 2025. Morosi did note that "never say never" regarding Scherzer's eventual transition to a bullpen role. For now, fantasy managers should expect him to open the campaign as a starting pitcher if he finds a suitor.

Max Scherzer Likely To Sign One-Year Deal

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer is likely to sign a one-year deal this offseason. Morosi noted that there are teams interested in signing the former three-time Cy Young winner. Last season, the right-hander was only able to log nine starts (43 1/3 innings) to the tune of a 3.93 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP for the Texas Rangers. He delt with numerous injuries such as shoulder fatigue, a back injury, and a hamstring strain. Earlier this offseason, the 40-year-old has expressed interest in pitching in 2025 and noted that a healthy offseason will prepare him well for the upcoming season. Even in a small sample size last summer, Scherzer still generated whiffs at a strong 29.2% rate and showed great command with a 5.6% walk rate. Even though he has numerous injury concerns, he is worth a look in deeper formats if healthy during Spring Training.
