Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Manning allowed no hits and gave up no runs across 5 2/3 innings of work against the New York Mets on Thursday. He struck out three batters while walking four. Manning, who started the season with Triple-A Toledo, was added to the roster ahead of Thursday's doubleheader. The 26-year-old will likely return to the minors in the meantime, but he solidified himself as a go-to option for the Tigers if a spot in the rotation opens up. He offers modest streaming appeal in favorable matchups if he returns to the big leagues.UPDATE: The Tigers sent Manning back to Toledo after his solid spot start in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader.
Detroit Tigers right-hander Matt Manning will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Game 2 of the team's doubleheader versus the New York Mets on Thursday. The second straight postponement against the Mets on Wednesday will mean that left-hander Tarik Skubal will presumably start the home opener in an excellent matchup on Friday against the visiting Oakland Athletics. The 26-year-old Manning is essentially the team's No. 6 starter but was forced to open the regular season in the minors. He will be a deep-league and DFS streaming sleeper in the early going against New York after allowing one run and striking out seven in five innings in his first start for Toledo last Friday. Expect Manning to be sent back to the minors following Thursday's start.
The Detroit Tigers announced on Friday that they optioned right-hander Matt Manning to Triple-A Toledo. The team also reassigned right-hander Drew Anderson to minor-league camp. Manning will head to the farm to open the 2024 campaign after losing out on a starting rotation spot in Detroit to Casey Mize and Reese Olson. The 26-year-old former ninth overall pick in 2016 will most likely be the first man up to join the Tigers' rotation this year once a need arises. In his third year in the big leagues in 2023, he went 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA (4.81 FIP) and 1.04 WHIP with 21 walks and 50 strikeouts in 78 innings pitched over 15 starts. If Manning can get past the injury bug that has hurt him in each of the last two seasons, he could easily become a mixed-league asset for fantasy managers.
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Manning has been incredibly sharp early in camp. The right-hander made easy work of the Atlanta Braves lineup during Friday's game. Manning threw four scoreless innings while striking out three batters during Friday's victory. The 26-year-old has allowed one run or less in three of his first four outings this spring. The former-first round pick has struggled to stay healthy early in his career. Manning has always had the potential to be a solid contributor at the big league level. Fantasy managers should keep on eye on him going into Opening Day.
