Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Keider Montero has been recalled ahead of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. The 23-year-old will slide into the rotation with Casey Mize (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Montero has already made two appearances with the Tigers this season. Neither of them went overly well considering he holds an ugly 9.45 ERA across 8 2/3 innings. Montero won't be a recommended streaming option ahead of Wednesday's game.
Detroit Tigers pitching prospect Keider Montero was scheduled to start for Triple-A Toledo on Monday night before he was a late scratch. The Mud Hens went with a bullpen game instead. Meanwhile, right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) will be placed on the 15-day injured list a left-hamstring strain, according to manager A.J. Hinch, so Montero figures to be the one to replace him in the Tigers' starting rotation through the All-Star break in mid-July. Montero, the club's No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline, struggled in his first 8 2/3 innings earlier this year in the majors, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out 11 in two appearances (one start). The 23-year-old's second big-league start figures to come this weekend on the road in Cincinnati against the Reds. Montero features high spin rates on his breaking pitches but will need to control them and limit the homers to find success at the next level.UPDATE: Montero is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.
After making his big-league debut in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Detroit Tigers have sent pitching prospect Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo. It was an expected move for the club's No. 7 prospect, according to MLB.com. Montero worked 4 1/3 innings in his debut and was a bag of mixed results. Montero recorded five strikeouts, but also allowed five hits, four runs and one walk. Montero, 23, remains a bright spot on the farm for the Tigers, but will need an injury or two to make an impact at the big-league level in 2024. Montero can safely remain on the waiver wire.
According to a source, the Detroit Tigers are calling up pitching prospect Keider Montero from Triple-A Toledo to be the 27th man on Wednesday for their doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nothing is official yet, but it looks like Detroit's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, will make his major-league debut on Wednesday in a spot start in one of the games of a doubleheader after Tuesday's contest in Pittsburgh was rained out. Montero is getting his first major-league call-up after going 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 17 walks and 36 strikeouts over 30 2/3 innings and nine starts for Toledo. The 23-year-old Venezuelan hurler can spin the ball with the best of them, but his struggles to control his secondary pitches and his vulnerability to the long ball will make him a risky fantasy streaming option in his MLB debut. And there's a good chance he'll be sent back to Toledo after Wednesday's game.
