Julio Teheran Hits Free-Agent Market Again

Veteran right-hander Julio Teheran opted out of his minor-league deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, according to the team. Teheran had gone 1-1 with a 9.18 ERA and 2.04 WHIP while striking out 12 and handing out 11 free passes in 16 2/3 innings in his four starts for Triple-A Norfolk, so the Orioles understandably had no designs on bringing him up to the big leagues anytime soon. The 33-year-old had a bloated 8.82 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in eight minor-league starts for Triple-A Iowa in the Chicago Cubs' minor-league system earlier this year and allowed four earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out three in just 2 2/3 frames in his only big-league start in 2024 for the New York Mets. Teheran is probably a long shot at this point to resurface in the big leagues with another team in a starting role.

Julio Teheran Designated For Assignment

The New York Mets have designated pitcher Julio Teheran for assignment on Tuesday, the team announced. Teheran signed a one-year $2.5 million deal with the Mets on April 5 after he failed to make the Baltimore Orioles roster. The right-hander made one start for New York allowing four runs on six hits across 2 and 2/3 innings. Following the outing, the Mets designated the right-hander for assignment, and in his spot, New York called up right-handed pitcher Dedniel Nez.

Julio Teheran To Start On Monday Against Braves

New York Mets right-hander Julio Teheran will officially make his 2024 debut with the Mets on Monday in Atlanta against the division-rival Braves, and he'll be good for 70 to 75 pitches. Teheran will also potentially be available out of the bullpen on Friday in the series opener against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old veteran was trying to win a roster spot with the Baltimore Orioles in spring training this year but was cut before Opening Day and has landed in the National League with the Mets. He'll give the team some rotation help with both Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill on the injured list due to shoulder injuries. At best, Teheran is a waiver-wire pickup for the pitching-needy in deep NL-only leagues, and he should be avoided in his first start versus Atlanta.
