John Schreiber Earns Second Save Of Season

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher John Schreiber picked up his second save of the season in Monday's 5-3 win over the Angels. Schreiber entered the game to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by two. He allowed a leadoff single, induced a groundball double play, and ended the game on a line-out. The Royals have only seen four save opportunities in the last 15 days, with half of them going to Lucas Erceg. Erceg pitched 1 2/3 innings in Sunday's game, so Schreiber got the call in the ninth on Monday. The 30-year-old now owns a 4.02 ERA with two of five save opportunities converted, a 7.11 K/9 rate, and a 3.08 BB/9 rate. Erceg still seems like the arm to roster for fantasy managers unless Schreiber continues to see high-leverage situations.

Royals Acquire John Schreiber From Red Sox

The Kansas City Royals acquired right-handed reliever John Schreiber from the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in exchange for minor-league right-hander David Sandlin, according to sources. Schreiber, 29, missed almost two months in 2023 due to a shoulder strain and finished the year with a 3.86 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, one save, 25 walks and 53 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings over 46 outings (two starts) in Boston. For a weak KC bullpen, he'll immediately become one of their better relievers and should work in high-leverage situations, making him an option in deep holds leagues while seeing an occasional save chance as well. Sandlin, 22, has some intriguing strikeout potential after fanning 88 hitters in 66 2/3 innings at Single-A and High-A in the Royals organization last year.

Red Sox Willing To Listen To Offers For Chris Martin, John Schreiber

While the Boston Red Sox have been in trade talks for closer Kenley Jansen this off-season, they are also reportedly willing to listen to offers for setup men Chris Martin and John Schreiber. Martin had an excellent 2023 season but is due $9.5 million in 2024, so a potential trade would seemingly be for monetary reasons. Schreiber's salary is not as taxing and he will not be a free agent until after the 2026 season, so the impetus to trade him may be to potentially clear roster space. Both pitchers posted strong peripherals with notable holds numbers, so they could be fantasy-relevant in deeper saves-plus-holds leagues in 2024, regardless of what teams they play on.
