Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson sounds inclined to find more at-bats for infielder Edmundo Sosa, even when the team isn't facing a left-handed starter. Sosa will be in the lineup on Tuesday against the division-rival Atlanta Braves with left-hander Chris Sale on the mound, but it remains to be seen who he'll replace. It could come in the outfield to replace either Brandon Marsh or Max Kepler. The catch is that the Phillies aren't seeking platoon roles for Marsh, Kepler or even second baseman Bryson Stott, but Sosa brings energy to the squad and is well respected in the locker room. The 29-year-old is 11-for-20 with four doubles, five strikeouts and a walk to begin the season and will be a nice low-cost sleeper option in DFS when he's in the lineup, just maybe not this Tuesday against the reigning National League Cy Young winner.

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Edmundo Sosa could have an increased role in the outfield. Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that with outfielder Weston Wilson (oblique) sidelined, the Phillies could turn to Sosa. Throughout the early part of camp, Sosa has been doing work with the outfielders but has only made three big league starts at this position. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his deployment during spring training games, as he may eventually become a depth outfielder on the roster. Last summer, the 28-year-old made all 90 of his starts in the infield and posted a .257/.313/.422 line with seven home runs and seven stolen bases. If Sosa were to shift to the outfield, he would likely operate as a depth option and could see occasional starts in left and center field.

Philadelphia Phillies infielder Edmundo Sosa will be tried out in left field during spring training, and "there's a chance" he could also play center field, according to manager Rob Thomson. If Sosa looks good in center, it would give the Phillies another right-handed platoon option against left-handers other than Johan Rojas. "He'd become kind of a super-utility guy which would be a nice thing to have," Thomson said. "Until he gets out shagging and real reads off the bat, you really can't tell." Sosa played only two innings in center in 2023 and three innings in left field in 2022, so he has very little experience in the outfield. However, it will give Philly more options to get the 28-year-old's bat into the lineup if he's hot. He's still not much of a fantasy asset in mixed leagues with limited playing time, but Sosa getting reps in center field is bad news for Rojas.

Infielder Edmundo Sosa and the Philadelphia Phillies settled on a one-year, $3.0 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration, according to a source. Sosa will return to the Phillies in 2025 once again as utility infield depth for one of the strongest rosters in baseball. It means the 28-year-old will mainly be an option for fantasy managers in NL-only formats. The 28-year-old hit .257/.313/.422 with a .734 OPS, seven home runs, 31 RBI, a career-high seven stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 90 games played in 2024 in his second year in Philadelphia. At best, he's a league-average hitter as a utility infielder. Sosa is most valuable in real life as insurance at third base, second base and shortstop for the Phils. He has a modest power and speed profile but strikes out frequently due to poor plate discipline. His multi-position eligibility makes him more attractive as a reserve in deeper fantasy leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas and infielder Edmundo Sosa will both start on the bench for the Phillies in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday at Citi Field against the division-rival New York Mets. Brandon Marsh is starting in center field and will hit ninth, while Bryson Stott will return to second-base duties and hit seventh against Mets left-hander Jose Quintana. Marsh and Stott won't be all that attractive in DFS lineups on Wednesday in the lefty-on-lefty matchup. Marsh has gone 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his career against Quintana, with Stott going 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Rojas started the first three games of the series in center field but had just one hit. The Phillies sat both Marsh and Stott in Game 3 against a lefty, but they're opting for more offense in this one in a must-win game to keep the series alive and sent it back to Philly for a Game 5.
