Chicago Cubs outfielder David Peralta opted out of his minor-league deal with the Cubs and became a free agent. Peralta chose to sign a minor-league deal with Chicago in the offseason after having surgery on the flexor tendon in his left elbow last October. The 36-year-old veteran left-handed hitter was batting just .217 (15-for-69) with two home runs, eight RBI and 10 runs scored in 20 games for Triple-A Iowa before opting out of his deal. Peralta will now be hoping he can latch on with another team where he'll have a better shot at making it back to the Show. The Venezuelan outfielder also underwhelmed last year in 133 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, slashing .259/.294/.381 with seven home runs, 55 RBI, four stolen bases and 47 runs scored in 422 plate appearances. For now, Peralta is well off the fantasy radar.
Chicago Cubs non-roster invitee and outfielder David Peralta is expected to make his spring debut with his new club on Tuesday. The 36-year-old had flexor tendon surgery in the offseason and signed a minor league deal with the club. He played his first several seasons in the majors with the Diamondbacks and the last year and a half with the Dodgers. He had a somewhat productive campaign in 2023 as a part-time player, but he's a long way from his best and most fantasy-relevant season of 2018 where he had a .368 WOBA and 130 wRC+.
Free-agent outfielder David Peralta (elbow) and the Chicago Cubs agreed to an undisclosed deal on Monday, according to sources familiar with the deal. Peralta joins the Cubs after hitting .259/.294/.381 with seven home runs, 25 doubles, a triple, 55 RBI, four stolen bases and 47 runs scored in 422 plate appearances over 133 games in 2023 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 36-year-old left-handed hitter had a disastrous second half of the season, though, and then had flexor-tendon surgery on his left elbow in late October. It remains to be seen if Peralta will be ready by Opening Day, but if he is, the veteran outfielder will mostly likely serve as a reserve outfielder for the Cubbies in 2024. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues shouldn't have him on their radars.
