Chicago Cubs reliever Colten Brewer (hand) broke his left hand after punching a dugout wall in disgust after exiting an appearance Saturday. He has been placed on the 60-day IL with the Cubs selecting the contract of Hunter Bigge from Triple-A Iowa as his replacement. Brewer is 0-2 this season with a 5.66 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 22 2/3 innings. Bigge had six saves at Iowa with a 0.77 ERA.
The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Colten Brewer (back) on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a lower-back injury and recalled right-handed pitcher Porter Hodge from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. Brewer last pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Sunday. In a middle-relief role for the Cubs this year, the 31-year-old has been solid for the team, posting a 3.09 ERA (3.20 FIP) and 1.11 WHIP with four walks and 12 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. In six years in the big leagues, Brewer has a 4.78 ERA (5.06 FIP) and 1.70 WHIP with a very mediocre 20.2% strikeout rate and 12.7% walk rate. Hodge, 23, was a 13th-round pick by the Cubs in 2019 and will be making his big-league debut when he enters a game out of the Cubs' bullpen.
Free-agent right-hander Colten Brewer announced on his Instagram account that he has signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Cubs. Brewer made three relief appearances for the New York Yankees this past season and also spent time with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball. The 31-year-old will give the Cubbies some relief depth to open the 2024 regular season but he will be well off the fantasy radar. In five years at the major-league level with the Yankees, Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres, Brewer has a 4.98 ERA (8.42 FIP) and 1.77 WHIP with 61 walks and 92 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings over 84 appearances (four starts).
