Former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brett Phillips agreed to a minor-league deal on Tuesday with the New York Yankees and will start working out at the team's minor-league complex in Tampa as he makes the transition as a pitcher. Phillips was once a top outfield prospect and made his big-league debut back in 2017 with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 30-year-old played in 39 games for the Los Angeles Angeles in 2023 before making the switch to pitching. In his seven years as an outfielder, Phillips hit just .187/.272/.347 with 31 homers, 99 RBI and 39 stolen bases in 393 games. He made his pitching debut on Monday in the National Baseball Congress World Series, and his fastball was sitting in the mid-90s. It's a cool story, but Phillips has an uphill battle to become fantasy relevant as a pitcher in the majors.
The Chicago White Sox have signed outfielder Brett Phillips to a minor-league deal. The deal will pay the veteran $1.2 million if he makes the big-league team. The 29-year-old had his best season at the plate in the 2021 season with the Rays but is coming off a pair of dismal campaigns with the Orioles and Angels. Most recently, he hit just .175 with three homers and three steals across just 71 plate appearances with the Halos in 2023 and also hit .230 with six HR and seven SB across 66 games at the Triple-A level. Phillips offers some defensive versatility as he's capable of playing all three outfield spots but his lifetime .187 average and 38.7% K% put a hard cap on his offensive upside.
