Brent Honeywell Heads To Injured List, Anthony Banda Returns

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Brent Honeywell (fingernail) was placed on the 15-day IL on Thursday with a cracked right fingernail. It is another tough loss for a pitching staff that has gone through the wringer this year in terms of injuries. Honeywell has been a quality relief option that can pitch multiple innings and can be used in any situation, so it'll be tough for the Dodgers to replace come playoffs. The severity of the injury is unknown, but he will be out until at least part of the way through the Wild Card series due to his placement on the IL. Anthony Banda was activated off the IL and is taking Honeywell's spot, so the news isn't all bad for the Dodgers.

Brent Honeywell Records First Save

The Los Angeles Dodgers turned to relief pitcher Brent Honeywell in Thursday's victory against the division rival San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers turned to their main late-inning options, Daniel Hudson, Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia and Blake Treinen in innings six through eight, leaving Honeywell for the ninth inning. Honeywell has pitched to a 0.79 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this season, but managers shouldn't expect many more save opportunities for him in the future. Even with Evan Phillips struggling lately, Hudson, Vesia and Treinen remain ahead of Honeywell in most games. For now, Honeywell can safely remain on the waiver wire.

Brent Honeywell Starting In Bullpen Day For Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Brent Honeywell, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, will make his Dodgers debut and serve as the opener in Sunday's series finale against the hosting Detroit Tigers in a bullpen game for LA. Manager Dave Roberts said that Honeywell might be built up to throw around 40 pitches on Sunday after arriving in Detroit around midnight. It's a sign of how badly the Dodgers rotation is hurting right now heading into next week's All-Star break. The 29-year-old Honeywell doesn't have a terrible matchup but is likely to only go a few innings and isn't recommended as a fantasy streamer. The former Rays top prospect only threw 3 1/3 relief innings for Pittsburgh this year and allowed an earned run with two walks and one strikeout. If he remains on the big-league roster in the second, he'll operate in a long-relief role.
