The Boston Red Sox have released first baseman C.J. Cron less than a month after he was signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to camp. At the time of the signing, it was presumed he'd be the backup to Triston Casas with Bobby Dalbec being the odd man out, however, it looks likely that it will be the opposite. Cron didn't do much with the opportunity he was given, going 3-for-15 (.200) with zero home runs in six spring games. Dalbec has shown a bit more this spring, going 11-for-44 (.250) with three home runs after mashing 33 long balls in the minors last season, while also providing both infield and outfield versatility. We'll see if Cron catches on somewhere for a team in need of a power bat. The 34-year-old was an All-Star as recently as 2022, his last fully healthy season in Colorado when he hit 29 home runs.

The Oakland Athletics have acquired veteran reliever Austin Adams from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations. The 32-year-old was added to the Athletics' 40-man roster and in a corresponding move, Trevor Gott was placed on the 60-day IL after it was determined he would need Tommy John surgery. Adams made 24 appearances for the D-backs last season before an ankle injury ended his season, posting a 5.71 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 17 1/3 IP. He had a nice 12:1 K:BB this spring for the Mets, although it went along with 5.68 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in six and one-third IP. He figures to pitch in middle relief and it's not a needle-mover for fantasy unless he's thrust into a more high-leverage role.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones fouled a ball off of his kneecap in Saturday's 6-2 Cactus League loss to the Reds. The 25-year-old said he felt numbness in his foot afterward, but today it is just a bruise. He believes he'll be ready for Opening Day and could even play in the final spring games. It's fantastic news for the lefty as he had become a high fantasy draft pick with his power-speed combo, although somewhat concerningly, he has zero home runs and zero stolen bases in 52 spring plate appearances. For anyone still drafting, RotoBaller ranks him at 49 overall, slightly ahead of his NFBC ADP of 54.

Free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been offered long-term deals from two teams and it sounds like it won't be long before he signs. Which two teams made the offers is still unclear, and there are still multiple teams that are in need of his services. The Yankees and Red Sox are still reportedly involved, while some playoff-caliber teams recently lost pitchers to injury including the D-Backs, Phillies, Yankees, and Astros and could make a move. CBS Sports' Jim Bowden also indicates that the Orioles could still be in the mix as well. Unlikely to pitch in the first couple weeks of the year, but coming off a season in which he posted a 3.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 166 K in 188 2/3 IP, the lefty can be a solid fourth starter for fantasy teams that have yet to draft.

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray's (hamstring) next minor-league game is expected to be on Thursday in Florida. The Cardinals were holding out hope that Gray would be able to avoid the injured list to start the season after injuring his hamstring in spring training, but they are ultimately playing it safe and will place the 34-year-old veteran on the 15-day injured list to start the campaign. If he can avoid any setbacks as he continues to ramp up his arm, it's possible that he could make his Cardinals debut in just the second week of the season. While Gray doesn't throw hard, he has excellent control and knows how to limit hard contact. He was also the runner-up in last year's American League Cy Young voting. Despite his injury, he makes for a high-floor No. 3 fantasy starter in his first year in St. Louis.
