The Chicago White Sox placed catcher Max Stassi (hip) on the 10-day injured list on Monday with left-hip inflammation and recalled catcher Korey Lee from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move. The 33-year-old Stassi will be eligible to be reinstated from the injured list on April 4, so he may not end up missing much time at all. However, it's not good news for Stassi after he missed all of 2023 with the Los Angeles Angels due to a hip injury and a family matter. When healthy, Stassi will be working as the primary backup catcher in Chicago to Martin Maldonado, leaving him very little fantasy appeal in the deepest of two-catcher leagues. Stassi also doesn't have much power in his lumber at the catching position.

The Athletic's Jayson Stark writes that left-hander Tyler Alexander will start either the fourth game of the regular season for the Tampa Bay Rays or serve as the bulk reliever versus the Toronto Blue Jays in a shy-away matchup. It's a sign that right-hander Jake Odorizzi (shoulder). It's his call whether he'll stay in extended spring training for the start of the regular season after missing all of 2023 while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. The 33-year-old Odorizzi didn't sign with Tampa until March 15. The 29-year-old Alexander is likely to move to Tampa's bullpen once Shane Baz (elbow) or Taj Bradley (pectoral) are able to rejoin the team's rotation. At best, Alexander will be a low-upside, matchup-based streamer in AL-only leagues to open the year.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo doesn't want to name a closer right away to open the season with right-hander Paul Sewald (oblique) starting the year on the injured list due to a Grade 2 left-oblique strain, but Kevin Ginkel is the most likely option to get the first crack at the job. Nothing is set in stone, though, and Scott McGough, who had nine saves in 2023, and Miguel Castro could be other options that Lovullo turns to late in games until Sewald is able to return. It's obviously a pretty big blow for Sewald's fantasy value to open the year, but Arizona's closer should be stashed in all fantasy leagues. The 30-year-old Ginkel picked up four saves in 2023 while also sporting a nice 2.48 ERA with 23 walks and 70 K's in 65 1/3 frames. Ginkel will now be a hot waiver-wire pickup for saves.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras is finishing up his spring on a high note. The 31-year-old blasted his first home run of the spring during Monday's win over the Chicago Cubs. It's fitting that Contreras smacked his first homer off his former team. Contreas is slashing a lackluster .250/.300/.472 so far this spring. At this point, fantasy managers know what they will get from Contreras. The move to St. Louis doesn't seem to have boosted his offensive ability.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell (hand) is going to open the regular season on the injured list. This is a tough break after Mitchell recently underwent X-rays on his hand that swelled up on him. The X-rays revealed that Mitchell suffered a fracture in his left hand, which is going to cost him some time. The organization has not given a timetable for Mitchell, but they likely will in the coming weeks. The loss of Mitchell means that Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, and Sam Frelick will open the season as the starting outfielders in Milwaukee.
