Devin Williams Expected To Miss Three Months With Stress Fractures

Milwaukee Brewers star closer Devin Williams (back) has two stress fractures in his back and is expected to miss around three months, according to sources. Williams pitched through back soreness last September, but it returned this spring. He will rehab and is expected to return by midseason. The top fantasy closer will now miss at least half the season, which will obviously cause his stock to drop considerably for those who have yet to draft for the 2024 season. The 29-year-old right-hander saved 36 games for the Brew Crew in 40 chances last year while also posting an elite 1.53 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 87 strikeouts and 28 walks in 58 2/3 innings pitched. It's a massive blow to the back end of Milwaukee's bullpen before the start of the season. Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps and Abner Uribe could all be options for saves in Milwaukee with Williams hurt.

Anthony Santander Not Hitting For Much Average

Baltimore Orioles first baseman/outfielder Anthony Santander couldn't end his spring struggles in Wednesday's 7-5 Grapefruit League loss to the Atlanta Braves, going hitless in two at-bats with one walk and a run scored. Santander may have cranked two home runs against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, but in 32 ABs overall during spring training, he's hitting only .156 (5-for-32) with three homers and six RBI. The 29-year-old switch-hitting slugger is going to play a big role as Baltimore's likely everyday cleanup man, and he should drive in plenty of runs in 2024 after slashing .257/.325/.472 with 28 four-baggers, 41 doubles, and 95 RBI in 591 ABs last season. While Santander should be a great source of slugging numbers in fantasy leagues at his 132.4 Yahoo ADP, his lack of speed and batting average will hurt his value a bit.

Spencer Steer Crosses Plate Three Times In Win

Cincinnati Reds outfielder/infielder Spencer Steer chipped in three runs during Wednesday's 19-11 Cactus League win over the San Francisco Giants, going 2-for-3 with a walk. It was certainly a high-scoring affair on Wednesday, and Steer was able to maintain his strong spring returns. In 26 spring training at-bats, the versatile 26-year-old is batting .296 with an .836 OPS, one home run, five RBI, and three stolen bases. After his first stint in the big leagues went poorly in 2022, Steer was a revelation for the Reds a season ago and finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting via a .271/.356/.464 slash line, 23 homers, 37 doubles, 86 RBI, and 15 stolen bases across 665 trips to the plate. Steer is a 2024 regression candidate due to his .252 xBA and .417 xSLG on Statcast, but his position eligibility is appealing, and Noelvi Marte's 80-game suspension means Steer will be needed for everyday ABs during at least the first half in Cincy.

Gleyber Torres Stays Hot With Solo Blast

New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres continued his hot hitting during Wednesday's 9-4 Cactus League defeat to the division-rival Boston Red Sox, clobbering a solo home run in the fifth inning. With the effort, Torres is now hitting a strong .308 alongside a .960 OPS, two long balls, five RBI, and one stolen base in 26 at-bats this spring. It's unclear what spot the 27-year-old two-time All-Star's bat will settle in as part of New York's star-studded lineup in 2024, but whether he regularly leads off or hits from the heart of the order, Torres is in line for another very productive campaign as the everyday Yankees second baseman. After slashing a dependable .273/.347/.453 with 25 round-trippers, 68 RBI, and 13 stolen bases in 672 plate appearances last year, Torres is a fine fantasy choice at the keystone inside the top 100 picks once the top-tier options are off the board.

Andrew Vaughn Cracks First Spring Home Run

Chicago White Sox first baseman Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's 15-4 Cactus League rout of the Milwaukee Brewers, walloping a two-run home run during the second inning. Vaughn is still delivering a lukewarm start during the spring, batting .257 with a .689 OPS, one homer, and three RBI in 35 at-bats. It remains to be seen if the 25-year-old former No. 3 overall pick will finally put all his slugging potential together in 2024, but he's coming in at a very affordable 253.0 Yahoo ADP in fantasy drafts. After slashing .258/.314/.429 with 21 big flies, 30 doubles, and 80 RBI in 566 ABs as the everyday ChiSox first baseman a year ago, Vaughn should be considered something of a post-hype sleeper entering his fourth season in the major leagues.
