Joey Wentz To Work As A Reliever In Camp

Detroit Tigers pitcher Joey Wentz will be working as a reliever in spring training rather than stretching out as a starter. It's a big spring for the left-hander as Wentz is out of minor league options, meaning he will either have to crack the club's bullpen out of camp or likely be cut loose from the 40-man roster. Wentz struggled mightily in the 2023 season as he worked to a 6.90 ERA across 25 outings (19 starts) with the Tigers while also tossing a 4.40 ERA across six starts with Triple-A Toledo. He was much better in the 2022 season when he posted a 3.03 ERA in seven starts with the Tigers alongside a 3.17 ERA in 12 outings (11 starts) at the Triple-A level. Once a promising prospect, Wentz's fantasy value is non-existent.

Justyn-Henry Malloy To Focus Exclusively On Outfield

Detroit Tigers infield/outfield prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy will be focusing strictly on the outfield moving forward and will not be in consideration at third base. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and president Scott Harris have both noted that the club will deploy several options at third base as they did not sign a full-time player at that position but it appears Malloy's path to the big leagues will indeed be in a corner outfield spot. The 23-year-old's bat appears to be big-league-ready as he hit .277 with 23 home runs alongside an 18% BB% and an .891 OPS at Triple-A in the 2023 season after he was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. The Tigers signed Mark Canha as the team's everyday left fielder as Malloy is most likely to begin the season in the minors before likely pressing for a promotion near the summer.

Alek Manoah Looking Good, Has Trimmed Down

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that right-hander Alek Manoah's delivery "is in a really good spot right now" and "his mental state of mind is right where it should be." In addition, he appears to have trimmed down his body since the end of what was a nightmarish 2023 season for him. In addition to terrible results that caused the Blue Jays to demote him to the minors twice, Manoah dealt with shoulder and mental issues last season. He appears to be fully healthy now, though, and ready to bounce back with another shot at a rotation spot in Toronto in the big leagues. The former first-rounder will be worth a gamble at a lower cost in fantasy drafts after he was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and finished third in the American League Cy Young voting.

Davis Schneider To Focus On Second Base, Left Field

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Davis Schneider did some outfield work over the winter and will be focusing on second base and left field in spring training this year. Cavan Biggio, Santiago Espinal and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will be options at both second and third base for Toronto in 2024, which means Schneider may have to move to left field in order to stay in the lineup consistently. The 25-year-old's bat certainly played up in his first 35 big-league games in 2023, as he hit .276/.404/.603 with a 1.008 OPS, eight home runs and 20 RBI in 141 plate appearances. However, he finished just 2-for-35 to end the year and struck out 30 percent of the time. Schneider showed some interesting skills with the stick in Toronto last year, but playing time could be an issue in 2024.

Francisco Lindor Says He Played Through Pain Last Year

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (elbow) said that he played through a lot of discomfort last season, but his elbow is feeling really good heading into the 2024 campaign. President of baseball operations David Stearns hinted that Lindor wouldn't have any restrictions on him in spring training after he had surgery in October to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. The 30-year-old All-Star didn't actually miss any time due to the injury in 2023, ultimately finishing with a .254/.336/.470 slash line, 31 home runs and 31 stolen bases in 160 games played. It was the first time he had an OPS above .800 since 2019, which is impressive considering he was playing hurt. RotoBaller currently has him ranked just outside the top-30 overall players for 2024.
