Eddys Leonard Shifted To Minor-League Camp

The Detroit Tigers have assigned shortstop Eddys Leonard to minor-league camp. Leonard was competing for a depth role on the major-league roster during camp but instead, the team will opt for him to continue his development in the minor leagues. Last season, the 24-year-old received his first extended look at Triple-A and posted a .263/.326/.455 slash line with 15 doubles and 10 home runs. He swiped seven bags but struck out 74 times and drew just 17 walks. This was a slight drop in production compared to the .302/.374/.530 line he held in the 2023 season during his first look at the Triple-A level. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progression with Triple-A Toledo as he should push for an early-season MLB debut. As a result, Wenceel Perez, Trey Sweeney, Zach McKinstry, and Jahmai Jones will continue to compete for a depth role in the Detroit infield.

Joe La Sorsa Makes Spring Debut

Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa (illness) made his spring training debut on Monday. La Sorsa tossed a shutout frame against the Milwaukee Brewers. He tallied two punchouts and did not allow a baserunner. The southpaw was sidelined during the early part of camp due to an illness. However, seeing him return to action suggests he will not face any limitations by Opening Day. Last season, La Sorsa logged 17 2/3 innings with the Washington Nationals and held a 4.58 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP. He tallied 14 punchouts with a strong 6.8 percent walk rate. In 2023, the 26-year-old posted a similar 4.41 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP across his first 32 2/3 MLB innings. Fantasy managers should expect the St. John's product to continue to compete for a low-leverage role in the Cincinnati bullpen during the remainder of camp.

Will Smith Back In Cactus League Lineup On Thursday

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith (knee) is back in the Cactus League lineup on Thursday against the Texas Rangers, doing the catching and batting sixth. Smith was hit by a pitch on his left knee in Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Cincinnati Reds and was removed as a precaution and he was just dealing with a minor contusion. The 29-year-old was also held back at the start of spring training due to an ankle injury that he suffered late last season. That injury was nothing to worry about either, and it was a way for the Dodgers to rest their starting catcher early in camp. Unless something else pops up with Smith, he'll be fine for the season-opening two-game series in Tokyo, Japan, against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19. Smith isn't an elite fantasy catching option, but he's ranked at No. 7 at the position at RotoBaller and resides in the best lineup in baseball.

DJ LeMahieu Diagnosed With Calf Strain, No Timetable For A Return

An MRI exam on New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (calf) on Wednesday showed that he's dealing with a left-calf strain, per Newsday's Erik Boland. LeMahieu will be shut down from baseball activities for at least a "couple of weeks." He has yet to talk about the MRI results with the team doctor, so there's currently no timetable for his return. The 36-year-old veteran injured his left calf in a Grapefruit League game last weekend. The Yankees haven't made any declarations about his Opening Day status at the end of March, but the way things currently look, we'd be surprised if LeMahieu didn't start the 2025 regular season on the injured list. The former second-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2009 out of LSU has won two batting titles in his career but has fallen off drastically the last few seasons. He played in only 67 games in 2024 and should be avoided in all mixed fantasy leagues. Oswaldo Cabrera is next in line to start at third base for the Yanks.

Giancarlo Stanton Expected To Rejoin Team This Weekend

New York Yankees outfielder/designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (elbows) had a second round of platelet-rich plasma injections in New York and is expected to rejoin the team in spring training camp in Florida this weekend, according to general manager Brian Cashman. However, Cashman also said Stanton won't be able to do much in terms of baseball activities. The 35-year-old veteran right-handed slugger is dealing with tennis elbow in both of his elbows and has already ruled out for Opening Day later this month. The question now is how soon will he be able to restart baseball activities and get himself prepared for making his 2025 season debut. Already an injury-prone slugger that doesn't provide much else for fantasy managers besides power, Stanton's fantasy draft stock is falling by the day with no timetable for a return.
