The St. Louis Cardinals designated outfielder Moises Gomez for assignment on Monday to make room for first baseman/outfielder Alfonso Rivas on the 40-man roster after they claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Gomez, a 25-year-old Venezuelan right-handed hitter, has yet to make his debut in the big leagues. In 131 games for Triple-A Memphis last year, he hit .232/.293/.457 with 30 home runs, 20 doubles, three triples, 79 RBI, five stolen bases and 77 runs scored in 567 trips to the plate. Gomez has 124 career home runs in eight minor-league seasons, but he's also struck out 887 times in 715 games, including a career-high 180 punchouts in 2023. Gomez could draw interest from other teams for his power, but if he goes unclaimed, he could return to the Cardinals organization and begin the 2024 season at Memphis.

The Los Angeles Angels designated reliever Kolton Ingram for assignment on Monday to make room for outfielder Aaron Hicks on the 40-man roster. Ingram, a 27-year-old left-hander, made his major-league debut in 2023 for the Angels and allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits (two homers allowed) while walking five and striking out seven in only 5 1/3 relief innings pitched. On the farm between Double-A Rocket City and Triple-A Salt Lake before his first big-league call-up, he faired better with a 2.95 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 34 walks and 77 strikeouts in 61 innings over 45 appearances out of the bullpen. If Ingram isn't picked up by another team on waivers, he could return to the Halos as left-handed relief depth with spring training right around the corner.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (elbow), who had his second Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, may be delayed (by design) to open the 2024 regular season, according to general manager Brandon Gomes. Recent additions of Japanese lefty Yoshinobu Yamamoto and right-hander Tyler Glasnow allow the Dodgers to "slow play" Buehler entering the 2024 campaign. He's expected to be at full strength for spring training after returning to the mound late in 2023 in the minors by throwing two innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City in September. Buehler struggled in his recovery after throwing sessions, though, and was eventually shut down. The Dodgers are most certainly going to limit his innings in 2024, but to what extent isn't known. Fantasy managers need to keep in mind that Buehler could be held back for the entire first month of the season.

Free-agent infielder/designated hitter Justin Turner slashed a strong .276/.345/.455 with the Boston Red Sox in 2023 and is widely regarded as a great clubhouse presence. However, evaluators think most of Turner's playing time needs to be at DH, which is how he was used in Boston. He had 98 games at DH, 41 at first base, 10 at second base and seven at third. Turner's hard-hit rate of 38.7% in 2023 was his lowest mark since 2018, a season in which he hit .312. It's never really been a strength of his, though, as his highest hard-hit rate was 44% in 2020. The 39-year-old had a career-high 96 RBI in a career-high 626 plate appearances and also came one short of his career-high in runs scored with the Red Sox, but his age and playing-time concerns (he's still a free agent) are big concerns for his fantasy profile as a corner infield option in deep-mixed leagues.

The Texas Rangers have had internal discussions about signing free-agent first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt, who played for manager Bruce Bochy in San Francisco. On paper, Belt is a perfect fit for the Rangers, as he'd effectively replace Mitch Garver in their lineup. However, the question all offseason has been how much cash general manager Chris Young has available. Texas just signed reliever David Robertson and are the favorites to re-sign lefty Jordan Montgomery, but it remains to be seen if there would be any money left after that for a hitter like Belt. The 35-year-old lefty slugger was one of just six players in baseball to generate a barrel percentage of at least 15% and a chase rate below 23%, which led to a nice .369 on-base percentage and a great .890 OPS against right-handed pitching.
