Jacob Wilson Plays Shortstop In Rehab Game

Oakland Athletics shortstop prospect Jacob Wilson (hamstring) got the start at shortstop and hit leadoff in a minor-league rehab game with Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday and went hitless in his two at-bats with a strikeout and hit-by-pitch before behind replaced at the 6 by Nick Allen after five innings. Wilson began his rehab assignment on Saturday and played in back-to-back games, signaling that he could return to the major-league roster early this week. The 22-year-old is Oakland's top prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He recorded a hit in his first major-league at-bat on July 19 but then strained his hamstring and has been on the 10-day injured list ever since. Even if Wilson doesn't rejoin the A's right away, he should at least come back up to the majors when rosters expand in September. The A's have nothing left to play for in another lost season, so Wilson could see significant playing time when he's back in the Bay Area.

Austin Barnes Heading To Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to place backup catcher Austin Barnes (toe) on the 10-day injured list on Monday after he took a hard foul ball off his left toe in the third inning of Sunday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, according to a source. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers are recalling catching prospect Hunter Feduccia back up to the big leagues for catching depth behind Will Smith. Barnes has been useful for his defense as a backup but is hitting only .241 with one homer and eight RBI in 44 games played in 2024. Feduccia appeared in one game for the Blue earlier this year against the division-rival San Diego Padres and had only one at-bat. The left-handed hitter has hit .282 with six home runs and 46 RBI in his time at Triple-A Oklahoma City. It's unclear if Barnes suffered a fractured toe, but if so, he certainly won't return in August.

Blake Treinen Makes Rehab Appearance

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Blake Treinen (hip) made a minor-league rehab appearance with Double-A Tulsa on Saturday and tossed a scoreless inning, walking none, striking out the side and not allowing a hit. Treinen appears to be on track to come off the 15-day injured list on the first day he's eligible on Tuesday after the dominant rehab outing over the weekend. The 36-year-old veteran is recovering from left-hip discomfort but should be back in the big-league bullpen this week. It's looking like trade acquisition Michael Kopech is taking over the closing duties in LA, but Treinen will return to a high-leverage, late-inning setup role when he's activated off the IL. In 34 appearances out of the bullpen in 2024, Treinen has been solid, posting a 2.67 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP, one save, 38 strikeouts and nine walks in 30 1/3 innings pitched.

Dane Dunning Making The Start On Monday

Texas Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning is making the start on Monday in the series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Globe Life Field. This will be Dunning's 14th start of the season and his second in a row after he had been moved to the bullpen. In his last start on Aug. 14 against the Boston Red Sox, he allowed four earned runs on five hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out three in five innings for a no-decision. Before that start, he hadn't started a game for Texas since June 16. The 29-year-old is getting a Pirates team that has really struggled of late, but he still won't provide much upside for fantasy managers as a streamer. In his 21 appearances (13 starts) this year, Dunning has pitched to a 4.92 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP and a 22.4% strikeout rate. His 10.5% walk rate is the highest of his career.

Emmanuel Rivera Designated For Assignment

The Miami Marlins designated infielder Emmanuel Rivera for assignment on Monday and recalled infield prospect Connor Norby from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. The Marlins also recalled right-handers Adam Oller and George Soriano from Jacksonville to begin the week. Norby is the team's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and was acquired in the trade in late July that sent Trevor Rogers to the Baltimore Orioles. The 28-year-old was already not playing all that much before the arrival of Norby, so he'll now be dumped from the 40-man roster. The Puerto Rican infielder played in 96 games for the Fish this year and hit just .214/.294/.269 with a career-worst .563 OPS, only one home run, 15 RBI and 15 runs scored in 229 plate appearances. Rivera is likely to pass through waivers unclaimed and could accept an outright assignment to Jacksonville.
