Chad Patrick Earns Roster Spot For Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Chad Patrick has made the team's Opening Day roster. Patrick was optioned to Triple-A earlier in March, but with pitchers DL Hall and Tobias Myers dealing with injuries and Brandon Woodruff not quite ready, Milwaukee found itself in need of pitching help. The righty showed enough command and strikeout potential this spring to earn a spot on the roster. Despite allowing five earned runs on 13 hits over eight-and-one-third innings of work, the former fourth-round pick walked just one batter and struck out 10. Whether he makes a start early on or comes on in relief, whenever he takes the mound it will be his MLB debut. The 6-foot-1 hurler pitched well at Triple-A last season, recording a 2.90 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and a 19.1 percent K-BB% over 136 1/3 IP, but he may be more of a DFS play if he earns a spot start rather than a waiver add.

Jake Bauers, Isaac Collins Make Opening Day Roster

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder/first baseman Jake Bauers and outfielder Isaac Collins have made the team's Opening Day roster, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Bauers, 29, hit .263 (10-for-38) with four doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and two stolen bases in 15 Cactus League games to earn a spot as a bench bat for the Brew Crew to open the 2025 season. The left-handed hitter does provide a little pop -- he has 51 long balls and 183 RBI in five major-league seasons -- but he swings and misses too much to provide a useful average, and he will need some injuries to occur to see regular playing time. Bauers will provide depth at first, in the outfield and at designated hitter. Collins, 27, will be another utility player for Milwaukee with the ability to play outfield, second and third base. He had an .861 OPS with 14 homers and 24 steals in 2024 for Triple-A Nashville.

Frankie Montas Gets Encouraging MRI Results

New York Mets starting pitcher Frankie Montas (lat) underwent an MRI earlier this week that showed good healing, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns. The right-hander remains a week or two away from beginning a throwing program. The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade lat strain early in camp. The expectation is that Montas is going to be sidelined for the first month of the season. The organization is hopeful Montas can return to the starting rotation at some point in May. Montas is coming off a fairly average season in 2024, so he's not someone that must be stashed in fantasy formats.

Jeferson Quero Returning To Minor-League Games

Milwaukee Brewers catching prospect Jeferson Quero (shoulder) played in a minor-league contest with Double-A Biloxi on Monday evening, serving as the designated hitter. Quero was unable to play in any Cactus League games after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in 2024. He was only able to appear in one contest last season before being sidelined. During spring training, the team eased his workload, but it appears the backstop could be ready for the start of the 2025 MiLB regular season. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he will likely remain the designated hitter for the foreseeable future until he returns behind the plate. In 2023, Quero spent his entire season at Double-A and posted a .262/.399/.440 slash line with 12 doubles and 16 home runs. If he can perform well at Triple-A this season, he could contend for an MLB debut during the second half of the campaign.

Trevor Megill Returns To Cactus League Action On Monday

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Trevor Megill is scheduled to pitch in Cactus League action on Monday against the Colorado Rockies for the first time since March 15, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. The Brewers haven't announced any kind of injury for Megill, though, and he has been pitching in minor-league games instead. As long as everything is good with the 31-year-old heading into Opening Day on Thursday versus the New York Yankees, Megill is expected to open the year as the Brewers' primary closing option now that Devin Williams is in the Bronx. In 46 1/3 innings in a high-leverage role for the Brew Crew last year, Megill was solid with a 2.72 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 50 strikeouts and 14 walks while also picking up the first 21 saves of his career. Durability as the No. 1 closer for Milwaukee is a concern, but Megill's fastball-curve combo generates plenty of swing and miss.
