On April 24, I broke down the luckiest and unluckiest starting pitchers based on a simple formula of ERA-SIERA. As a refresher, SIERA was introduced in 2011 and stands for Skill-Interactive Earned Run Average. It’s the peripheral that “attempts to evaluate a pitcher’s skill by considering factors beyond strikeouts and walks, including the quality of contact on batted balls” and is slightly more predictive than xFIP.
