Summary
It has been an uphill battle for Cam Skattebo throughout his college career after earning no stars from 247 sports as a recruit. He started at Sacramento State where he amassed over 2,200 scrimmage yards and 17 scrimmage touchdowns. Following a strong sophomore season, he transferred to Arizona State as a three-star transfer. As a junior, he was impactful but it wasn’t until this year that Skattebo put himself on the map. His 1,711 rushing yards and 2,316 scrimmage yards led the Big 12, and both were second in the nation. This performance earned him Heisman consideration, and he ultimately finished fifth in voting.
Skattebo may not have prototypical size, but for what he lacks there he makes up for in effort. His 5-foot-9, 219-pound frame is low to the ground, allowing him to run with brutal physicality that he leans on heavily. Behind the line of scrimmage, he displays great patience to allow blocks to set up and follows pulling blockers into the hole. Pairing this with his vision and anticipation allows him to expose defenses by running to where the hole will open. We also see him use his impressive jump cut paired with leverage attacks to bait defenders to open his own running lanes. When it comes to perimeter running, he is serviceable, but at the NFL level he’ll be a better interior runner.
His decisiveness and initial burst both enhance the work he does behind the line of scrimmage, allowing him to hit the second level quickly. While in the hole, we see him alter his shoulder angle to shed upper-body tackle attempts. His brutal style of running also helps him rip through would-be tacklers, while his balance allows him to stay upright after contact. But at times, he is a bit clunky here. There is more to be desired when it comes to his open-field elusiveness, leaning into contact as opposed to making players miss. At times, this physical style bites him as the ball finds its way onto the ground, and this is an area he needs to improve. He also shows quick feet and lateral movement skills to navigate crowded areas and alter his path through the first two levels. When stringing moves together, his re-accleration skills are adequate but need to improve. Once in open space, he possesses enough speed to create chunk plays but is far from a burner.
In the passing game, Skattebo is above average but far from polished. His brutal running style carries over to this area as well, often attacking rushers in pass protection. There is a lack of consistency in his pass-blocking reps, especially when it comes to technique and anchoring. As a pass-catcher, he has quality hands that allow him to catch most of the balls thrown his way. He has experience running some more expansive routes but is not the most fluid route-runner. Once he has the ball in his hands, he fluidly transitions to a runner and eats up space quickly.

Fantasy Outlook
Skattebo has built an impressive profile that is based on physicality, and at the NFL level he will likely find himself in a similar role. He is best suited to become an early-down pounder. His vision and quick feet will allow him to pick up short-yardage situations, while his strength will push piles. With good burst and decent speed, he can also break a few runs free on occasion. The biggest question will be if he can withstand the rigours of an NFL season with the beating he is likely to take as a runner. These early-down grinder roles fail to cultivate significant fantasy production unless they are tied to an explosive offense. That landing spot will be critical for Skattebo. There is RB1 upside in his profile, but it’s more likely he will become a fringe RB2 for most of his career.
