Tipico Tips: Travelers Championship bets

The PGA Tour flies across the country this week to Connecticut where the Travelers Championship will take place at TPC River Highlands. This is a familiar stop for the tour with plenty of data to dig through. The main takeaway to me is that there are different ways to tame the beast this week off the tee and both distance and accuracy could be a golfer’s weapon of choice. The par 70 course is quite short sitting at just over 6,800 yards and the key will be to take advantage of shorter irons.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite bets on Tipico Sportsbook.

Matchup | Cameron Smith -110 vs. Matthew Wolff (tie is a loss)

Last week at the U.S. Open was the first time we saw Wolff since he withdrew from the Masters back in April, and he finished a respectable 15th, but I’m not ready to say he’s back. The promising part for him was that he drove the ball well and was able to take advantage of this at Torrey Pines, but his play on the weekend was poor overall. Perhaps it was fatigue, or simply just bad play, but I will need more than four rounds to drastically change my outlook at his current rating. Smith on the other hand lost an astonishing 5 strokes around the green somehow in the second round (a couple horrible bunker shots, one resulting in a penalty stroke). He has continued to play steady golf all season, having a career best year on tour and although he has missed two straight cuts there is nothing troublesome about the results; missed cuts happen. I believe Smith should be closer to -140 and that Wolff is getting too much credit for his hot start to the U.S. Open.

Top 20 | David Lipsky +600

I hit a nice top 20 on Lipsky at the Palmetto Championship and believe he is still undervalued this week. There is not a lot of strokes gained data from his past unless you go dig through his time on the European Tour. He has spent much of 2021 playing Korn Ferry Tour events despite having his PGA Tour card locked up for next year. What I do know of Lipsky is that his irons are the strongest park of his game, and his lack of distance OTT won’t be as much of a hinderance at TPC River Highlands this week. He is an average putter on the regular but has shown the ability to roll them regular, which quickly pushes him to the top of leaderboards when matched with his typical approach game. I think the course fit is quite good this week and look for him to sneak back into the mix.
