Open Championship golf forces players to embrace their inner artistry. Every tee shot, every approach and every chip shot presents the player with a multitude of options of how to play the shot. Unlike most weeks on the PGA Tour, no two players will play any shot identically. Players spend hours and hours becoming almost robotic — trying to make their swings, putting strokes, and everything in between as perfectly repeatable as possible, only to arrive in Scotland this week forced to abandon the robotic in favor of the artistic. Flighted draws into left to right winds, sky-high tee shots down wind, and pitch shots that bound forwards perfectly only to check up right next to the hole are just some of the wonderful examples that we’ll see. Of course, we’ll also get our fair share of attempted artistry that results in dads across the country saying, “Well I could have done that!”
Our job, as obviously different as it is, is quite similar. In place of our traditional Course Fit Model, we got creative this week and used all Open Championships as the basis (with the exception of St. Andrews — we’re allowed to love and appreciate its history while acknowledging that it is no longer a championship golf course). From there, we must admit that this year’s Open Championship is no guarantee to play like those before it, leaving room to speculate about the skill sets that will translate most intensely to success. And finally, we must acknowledge that we are at the mercy of Mother Nature every bit as much as the players are. Combining all of this to build DFS lineups takes, well… artistry.
