Breaking down the top DFS options for the Workday Charity Open

The PGA tees off its Workday Charity Open Thursday, and here at FTNDaily we’re rocking out some prime DFS golf content for the tournament. For this piece, I’m going to break down my player pool for multi-entering lineups, as well as my three main builds.

This piece will sometimes be in video format, but for this week it’s going to be in an article and you can find the PGA sheet I have been doing for free over the last couple weeks here. Going forward it is going to be for FTN subscribers only, but you can get this free for the first few days while the majority of content at FTN is free.

Expensive tier ($9.5k+)

Another very strong field this week, in the expensive range — Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay grade as the top two plays this week and it's hard to refute that. However, I went with Hideki Matsuyama as a core play this week. He was able to run up the scoreboard Saturday, as he often does. One really bad hole on Sunday led to an average day, I think he gets rolling in this one and contends for the top finish. Cantlay and Thomas are elite plays as well, and I will have a ton of them, even though Cantlay projects as one of the higher-owned golfers of the week. Cantlay has some great course history here and is essentially the defending champ at this course considering he won the Memorial last year. Justin Rose and Viktor Hovland round out the expensive tier for me, Rose has looked solid despite missing the cut in his last event and he has great course history. Hovland is on a tear right now and this should be another course that plays well for him.

Middle tier ($8-9.4k)

The group in the $8,000-9,400 range is very interesting for me this week — Rickie Fowler gained strokes across the board last week and is just 9k. Sungjae Im, Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland are all too cheap and come in as strong plays for me this week. Woodland especially — he is ninth in my player rater this week at just $8,300k. Im and Reed have both struggled with consistency out of the break, but they also have flashed some upside and to get them at this price is extremely intriguing. Matt Kuchar is another guy with some strong course history, and he gives you a sense of stability in this range. Rounding out this tier is Adam Hadwin, Jaquinn Niemann and Matthew Fitzpatrick. They are all strong iron players who have had very strong weeks of their own after returning from the break.

Value tier ($7-7.9k)

This tier scares me, but it also excites me. The guys I like most in this tier bring massive upside, but also little to no floor. Billy Horschel, Benny An and Scottie Scheffler are my top three plays in this range. We’ve seen the risk/reward with these guys time and again, and I am willing to roster these guys for their ceilings at their prices. Mark Hubbard was almost a core play last week, ending up in two of my three main lineups, and finishing T12th. Honestly, it could have been an even better weekend for him if it weren’t for two brutal missed 4-foot putts. Kevin Streelman is coming off the second-place finish, and he grades out pretty well in this one as he is 23rd in my player rater this week. Other guys I have in this range include Harold Varner III, Jason Day, Corey Conners, Kyle Stanley, Maverick McNealy and Max Homa. Stanley and Conners deserve a bit of a shoutout, as Conners is 20th in my player rater this week, and Stanley projects as one of the better values this week.

Punt tier (Under $7k)

I don’t love this range this week because I don’t think it’s very deep, but I do like Carlos Ortiz and Henrik Norlander a pretty good amount. Ortiz is the top value play for this week in terms of projections, and he even rates out as the 38th best play for me in the player rater, so he grades out pretty well. Norlander was on fire last week, gaining a ton of strokes on the approach and off-the-tee, if he stays hot with his irons the 6.5k tag will be far too cheap. Chesson Hadley and Seung-Yul Noh round out this range. I probably won’t be playing many guys in this range.
