The Best NHL Prop Bets
Brandon Montour Point
(-120, BetMGM)
The Panthers to win in 60 and on the puck line are two of my favorite plays on this massive 14-game NHL slate. The Canadiens return home after a two-week road trip, which began in Boston, continued on the west coast, before wrapping up last night in Columbus. The Panthers have been waiting in Montreal and I expect them to jump on the Habs early. The Canadiens have lost five of their last eight games and they’ve given up at least four goals in four of those games. At 5v5/60 this month, the Habs rank fourth in expected goals against, sixth in shots and shot attempts allowed, fifth in high danger chances surrendered and seventh in high danger chances allowed. On top of that, Montreal ranks second in the NHL in penalties taken. Montour only has one point in six games since returning to the lineup, but he’s averaging 24 minutes per game, and I expect a few power plays for Florida.

Dawson Mercer Point
(+100, BetMGM)
I wanted to give Dawson Mercer in Tuesday’s article, but he wasn’t available at any sportsbooks, so we went with Gustav Nyquist. It worked out for us, and I like Nyquist again, but I want to give some love to Mercer. The winger has a goal and an assist in back-to-back games for the Devils. It’s not a surprise he’s hitting the score sheet because he was placed on a line two games ago with Jack Hughes and Tyler Toffoli. That trio has combined for five goals and 11 points in their last two games. New Jersey has scored 12 goals in those two games. I love Mercer as a player, I think he should be rostered in all fantasy hockey leagues, but it really is about Jack Hughes. The Devils’ superstar leads all skaters in points per game and he’s racked up 32 shots on goal in his five games since returning to the lineup (9, 6, 8, 1, 8).
Bonus
- Jack Hughes O 4.5 SOG (+115, DraftKings)
- Jack Hughes O 1.5 PTS (+124, DraftKings)
- Tyler Toffoli Goal (+165, FanDuel)
- Dawson Mercer Assist (+220, BetMGM)
- Hughes, Toffoli, Mercer Points (+210, Bet365)
- Hughes, Toffoli, Mercer 2+ Points Each (+3300, Bet365)
- Hughes 7+ SOG (+500, Bet365)
- Hughes 8+ SOG (+800, Bet365)
Consider laddering Jack Hughes’ shot prop. I have one unit on him to have 5+ SOG, but I’d suggest .50 units on 6+ SOG and .25 units on 7+ SOG. He’s +800 for eight shots, which he’s had in three of his last five games. We hit this in his last game.
Martin Necas Over 2.5 SOG
(-115, DraftKings Sportsbook)
There are several intriguing shot prop candidates on the Carolina Hurricanes as they take on the New York Islanders. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Hurricanes rank first in shot attempts (72.59) and the Islanders have allowed the most shot attempts at 5v5/60 (70.73). New York has coughed up the third most shots at 5v5/60, and the Hurricanes rank second in shots on goal. Andrei Svechnikov and Brent Burns are two players I believe will get three shots, but there’s a lot of juice next to their NHL props. Svechnikov was a late scratch Tuesday, so keep an eye on his status, but it sounds like he’ll return to the lineup. I’d include both in a shot prop parlay. As for a single play, I decided to go with Martin Necas. The winger hasn’t been hitting consistently, but he had six shots on goal two games ago when he was in a favorable matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Necas ranks third among forwards in shot attempts at 5v5 this month (43), behind Jordan Martinook (49) and Svechnikov (45). Martinook is worth a sprinkle as he’s racked up at least three shots on goal in seven of his last 12 games, including one game against NYI.
Bonus
- Andrei Svechnikov O 2.5 SOG (-160, DraftKings)
- Brent Burns O 2.5 SOG (-150, DraftKings)
- Jordan Martinook O 2.5 SOG (+150, DraftKings)
- Svechnikov, Aho, Burns, Jarvis, Necas 2+ SOG (+150, Bet365)
