With our FTN betting package, you’ll get picks from everyone at FTN, plus tools, projections and access to Discord, where I’ll discuss every slate.

Today’s Best NHL Bets

San Jose Sharks +1.5

(-120, Bet365/Caesars)

Yaroslav Askarov was the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by Nashville, but his tenure in Nashville didn’t last very long because Juuse Saros had emerged as a world-class goaltender, and the lack of a feasible way for him to make it up to the pros led him to request a trade, which brought his rights to the Sharks. He has been outstanding at every level, and that includes the KHL, which most consider the second-best professional league behind the NHL. It’s amazing what good goaltending can do, because he looks roughly about 10x better than both Alexander Georgiev and Vitak Vanecek. Askarov has only allowed more than three goals in one of his seven starts this season, and his 0.69 GSAA/60 is good enough for fourth in the NHL (min. five games). With the Sharks off until Friday, I would imagine they’re going to roll with Askarov given his hot run. The Golden Knights are undoubtedly one of the league’s best and most consistent teams, but the Sharks have been able to keep most games close even with questionable goaltending most of the season. Askarov is a game changer, and I don’t know if the oddsmakers have really given him as much respect as he deserves. The puck line here on the Sharks gives us some margin for error, and that’s the bet I like.

Dallas/NY Rangers Over 6

(-114, BetRivers)

Goaltending hasn’t exactly been the strong suit for both the Stars and Rangers. While I don’t believe that’s going to last the rest of the season, it’s not something that’s going to get fixed any time soon. Igor Shesterkin has had some big performances, including the surprising upset in Dallas a few weeks ago, but he has since been placed on IR and will be unavailable for the rematch at Madison Square Garden. Instead, it’ll be either Jonathan Quick or Louie Domingue — two goalies who are long past their prime. This game total has a strong chance of getting to at least 7 or 8, and that has me set on a taking the over for at -114.

Detroit Red Wings ML

(+104, FanDuel Sportsbook, 2 units to win 2.08 units)

Situations like these really make it crystal clear that that Todd McLellen is a big upgrade in the coaching department compared to Derek Lalonde. The Wings have won four straight games, and all of these wins were absolutely not a coincidence, considering they included victories against the Capitals and Jets, who are both leading their respective divisions. I think this current run is legit, and the players appear to have bought into McLellen’s system. I genuinely have no remote idea how the Senators are favorites here. They are a completely different team without Linus Ullmark between the pipes, and the drop off to Anton Forsberg and Leevi Merilainen is quite significant. I really like the Red Wings in this situation and they’re my big bet of the night — taking 2 units to win 2.08 units.
