Prime-Time First TD Bets — Friday Night Football, Week 1

The NFL is still back, again. Unfortunately, the first game didn’t go our way Thursday, as Derrick Henry was the first player to get across the goal line. As I mentioned in Thursday’s article, I won’t be betting on players like Henry this season in my quest to nail “first TD scorer” bets. A team’s top running back and wide receiver do often score first, but the prices offered on them are almost always too small to bet.

We’ll be focusing on players further down the roster who are being offered at higher odds. If you did miss my first batch of first touchdown bets, be sure to go back and read the first few paragraphs. I offer some general advice and expectations for these wagers this season. First touchdown scorer is one of the most exciting bets you can make and there is value to be had, but patience and proper staking is key.

Now, on to the second game of the NFL season, the first NFL opening-week game played on a Friday since 1970. Oh, it’s also being played in Brazil. International games can be tougher to handicap. For example, the Green Bay Packers are staying at a hotel that is further from the stadium than where the Philadelphia Eagles are staying. It’s been reported that they may have a two-hour (or longer) drive to the stadium. It can’t say exactly how that will impact their performance, but you should certainly consider it before placing any wagers. For the sake of our first touchdown bets, I don’t expect it to make a big difference, so let’s dive in and see where value lies in the market for the first player to get across the goal line.
