The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to terms with free-agent quarterback Trey Lance on a one-year contract worth up to $6.2 million. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news. The North Dakota state product will join his third squad after the San Francisco 49ers selected him third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lance spent last season with the Cowboys and passed for 266 yards and one interception with no touchdowns in four games (one start). He added 41 yards on 11 rushes. He projects to compete with teammate Taylor Heinicke for the second-string QB job behind Justin Herbert. Due to injuries and inefficient play, the 24-year-old hasn't been afforded much playing time. However, his athletic, toolsy upside could give him a chance to unseat Heinicke as the QB2 in L.A.

TSN's Dave Naylor reports that the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League have added free-agent quarterback Trey Lance to their negotiation list this week. Lance's father, Carlton, was a former cornerback for the Roughriders. The former third overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 out of North Dakota State hasn't generated any interest in the NFL on the free-agent market and could be on the verge of heading to Canada. The 24-year-old signal-caller saw some action with the Dallas Cowboys last year with Dak Prescott (hamstring) going down with a season-ending injury, and he went 25-for-41 for 266 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in four games (one start). He spent the last two years in Dallas as the No. 3 QB behind Prescott and Cooper Rush. Since debuting in 2021 with the Niners, Lance has only five TD passes and four picks in 12 games (five starts).

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent quarterback Trey Lance is expected to move on in free agency this offseason, as chief executive officer Stephen Jones said that Lance is "probably going to be looking for something different." The Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers before the start of the 2023 season, but he didn't play at all that year and appeared in just four games (one start) in 2024 as the third-stringer, throwing for 266 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Backup Cooper Rush is also headed toward free agency, but the Cowboys would probably prefer to draft a new QB to groom as Dak Prescott's (hamstring) backup than re-sign Lance. The 24-year-old former third overall pick by the Niners in 2021 was injured in his rookie season and hasn't really ever gotten the chance to live up to his high expectations. He'll be looking for backup work on the open market in March.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance was under center on Sunday as a starting quarterback for the first time since Week 2 of 2022. The inexperienced signal caller had a solid day, completing 20-of-34 passes for 244 yards and carrying the ball six times for 26 yards. Lance played well but struggled to convert in the red zone, with four drives ending in field goals and one ending as a turnover on downs. On the first quarter drive where Dallas failed to convert on fourth down, Lance missed running back Rico Dowdle in the end zone on what should have been an easy pass. The Cowboys ultimately fell 23-19 to the Commanders, but Lance put together a solid audition as he is slated to hit free agency in the spring.

According to sources, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance is expected to play his first significant snaps of the season in the Week 18 regular-season finale on Sunday versus the division-rival Washington Commanders. Earlier on Friday, owner Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that the team won't reveal who they will start in Week 18 until Sunday, which is further evidence that Lance could make the start over Cooper Rush to close out a disappointing season. From 2022 through 17 weeks this season, Lance has attempted just 20 passes in game action. Rush has been the starting QB for Dallas since Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9, but it looks like Lance is going to see some run in Week 18. He won't have top wideout CeeDee Lamb (shoulder) to work with and could come in as relief for Rush on Sunday, so the 24-year-old will be a high risk for a potentially low reward in fantasy.
