Opening odds – Patriots vs. Jets
The debut of Zach Wilson was spoiled by the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 in a game that ended in a 19-14 loss. The Jets started out their season as underdogs against the Panthers and will do so once again against the New England Patriots — this will most likely be a familiar spot every week of this season. While the Patriots also had the debut of their first-round rookie QB (Mac Jones) spoiled, they will be favored once again with an added point at -5.5.
Quarterback analysis – Mac Jones vs. Zach Wilson
Mac Jones’ debut was neither great nor bad, but it did show some promise for the young quarterback in a Bill Belichick offense. Jones threw for 281 yards with one touchdown against the Miami Dolphins. He also was efficient as he completed 29 of his 39 passes. The Dolphins were able to limit and keep the Patriots out of the end zone for the majority of the game. Many may question how Mac Jones was able to find Nelson Agholor for his first touchdown of the season as a “roughing the passer” set up the Patriots in the red zone.
Another debut also happened Sunday with the Jets’ Zach Wilson. In an offense that had very little rushing production, Wilson was relied on throughout the game. He threw for 258 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He was not as efficient as Jones, as he just completed 20 of his 37 passes. If the pressure is turned on by the New England Patriots, Wilson may be in trouble.
Latest Patriots betting news & info
The Patriots made a surprising move to end the preseason when they announced Jones would be the starter and released Cam Newton, showing they were all in on their rookie quarterback. Jones was able to find a balance in the offense Week 1 as Damien Harris relieved some pressure by rushing for 100 yards. Jones targeted eight different players throughout the air. Opening up this offense will put the Patriots in a prime spot to secure their first win of the season coming this Sunday.
The Patriots had a mixed bag of results last season as they finished third in the AFC East while going 7-9 against the spread. They also weren’t as productive as they hit the under eleven times, ending their season with seven straight games under for total points. While it was a close loss to kick off this season, they weren’t able to cover the spread but also continued their streak of hitting the under, which could be a consistent result once again.
Latest Jets betting news & info
The Jets started off this season very similar to last year, once again failing to cover the spread in a low-scoring affair. While Wilson was productive, this offense struggled to get the run game established — the team’s three running backs were held under 50 yards combined. Wilson was able to find eight different targets, as Corey Davis led the ground with 97 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
In the 2020 season, the Jets went 6-10 ATS while going 7-9 in over/unders. The spread may be hard to cover once again as this team has question marks scattered throughout the roster with multiple rookie defensive players starting and a rookie-led offense with Wilson. With the spread being a difficult point of this season for the Jets, the total points may be the point of attack once we see more from Wilson and company, which should be more of a productive offense.
Patriots vs. Jets betting picks – NFL Week 2
There will be more good to focus on with the Patriots than for the Jets. While the spread should be covered with Jones and his offense, my spot will be with the over of 43 total points. With two rookie quarterbacks coming into Week 2 in hopes of getting their first win, sparks should fly on both sides. Both quarterbacks were able to target multiple players throughout their debut and with the defensive side of the New York Jets being filled with rookie players, Jones could shine bright this weekend.
