Malik Willis’ Odds to Win Offensive Rookie of the Year
The third-round pick out of Liberty is set to begin his rookie season with long odds to win Rookie of the Year. His current odds are +5000 on DraftKings Sportsbook. However, we all know about Malik Willis’ potential. He threw for over 5,000 yards and ran for over 2,000 more during his two seasons at Liberty. His collegiate production had many arguing whether he was the best quarterback in this draft class.
His upside was on full display in his preseason debut against Baltimore. Willis went 6-for-11 for 107 yards throwing the football, but it was what he did with his legs that caught everyone’s attention. He constantly found his way out of the pocket as he extended plays and scrambled. He even accounted for his team’s first touchdown by outrunning the entire defense while reversing field to get to the pylon.
Willis would ultimately finish the game with five rushes for 38 yards and one touchdown on the ground before being pulled in the second quarter. After the game, head coach Mike Vrabel said Willis was pulled in the middle of a series because he was supposed to throw the ball and he did not. So, backup Logan Woodside took his place.
How Can Willis Win Offensive Rookie of the Year?
There’s a clear reason as to why Willis’ odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year are so long: He is not the starting quarterback. He will have to dethrone tenured starter Ryan Tannehill. Unfortunately, that seems rather unlikely as Tannehill has had tremendous success with Tennessee and taken them to multiple playoff appearances. The most logical path for Willis to take over the job is via injury to Tannehill. If Willis gets his shot in the regular season, he will have to be much better passing and follow the play calls until he earns the privilege to be creative under Mike Vrabel.
