Kyler Murray has a lot to prove in the 2022 NFL season, following his $230.5 million contract extension and the controversial clause included in the deal that raised questions about his work ethic (which has since been removed). In 14 games during the 2021 season, Murray had 3,787 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Murray was a top MVP candidate in the first half of the season, leading Arizona to a 7-0 record while posting a 116.8 passer rating. The 2018 Heisman Trophy winner would go on to miss three games with a sprained ankle before the wheels fell off and the Cardinals were blown out on Wild-Card Weekend.

Murray only averaged 30.2 rushing yards per game last season compared to his 270.5 yards through the air. Murray only had one game in 2021 with double-digit rushing attempts. In order to go over 4,050.5 passing yards, Murray needs to average 238.3 yards over the course of 17 games. Not only did Murray easily surpass that number last season, but he averaged 248.2 yards per game two seasons ago. Murray’s 2021 average would’ve gotten him to 4,057 yards in 15 games. 

Murray’s 2021 passing total wasn’t bolstered by a handful of big-time performances. The quarterback was a model of consistency in terms of yardage. He threw for at least 239 yards in 12 of his 14 starts. Murray was limited to 229 yards in a game against the Cleveland Browns because Arizona won by 23 points, and Colt McCoy finished the contest under center.

Murray had 26 touchdown passes when he played a full season in 2020. He was on a 29-touchdown pace for 17 games in 2021. Murray’s completion percentage, touchdown percentage, interception rate, yards per game and passer rating have all improved each year. Murray has been selected to consecutive Pro Bowls, and there’s a good chance that streak will extend to three years in a row.
