(Leading up to the 2021 NFL season, FTN’s Tyler Loechner will dive into the fantasy football numbers to bring you his Fantasy Stat of the Day, five days a week.)

Last week, we looked at the RBs who had the longest average TD runs and the WRs with the longest average touchdown receptions. We wanted to know which players packed the most value into their TDs.

Today’s Stat of the Day will take a look at which QBs had the longest TD passes, on average.

Justin Herbert averaged over 20 yards per TD on his 31 scores

Here are the top 10 QBs from last season (minimum 20 passing TDs) ranked by the average distance of their passing scores:

Player Pass TDs Avg. Length Of TDs
Derek Carr 27 22.0
Deshaun Watson 33 21.6
Justin Herbert 31 20.8
Ben Roethlisberger 33 19.3
Kyler Murray 26 17.5
Patrick Mahomes 38 17.3
Matthew Stafford 26 16.4
Philip Rivers 24 16.3
Kirk Cousins 35 16.1
Ryan Tannehill 33 16.0

A few thoughts:

  • Justin Herbert has a very real chance of being the next big thing. The 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year tossed 31 TDs last year with an average TD length of 20.8, third best in the league. He’s also showed potential of being a Konami Code cousin. With the bulk of his supporting cast returning (or in the case of Austin Ekeler, returning from injury), Herbert should be able to take another leap forward in 2021, solidifying himself as an every-week fantasy starter.
  • Ben Roethlisberger’s arm has appeared dead in the eyes of many, yours truly included, but this stat suggests otherwise. His 19.3-yard average depth of TD ranked fourth in the league. With arguably the best trio of WRs in the league, Roethlisberger remains a late-round value.
  • Derek Carr’s name is not the one I expected to see atop this list. But with Henry Ruggs, Nelson Agholor, and WR/TE hybrid Darren Waller at his disposal last year, I suppose it’s not a huge shock. Agholor is now gone, but Ruggs remains and should take a step forward. Carr isn’t an every-week starter, but he’ll have some streaming and DFS appeal.
  • Ryan Tannehill ranked 10th among QBs in this stat last year, but it won’t be a surprise to see him crack the top five in 2021 with Julio Jones added to his arsenal. Tannehill, already an underrated fantasy asset, is poised for some really big games in 2021.
