Training camps provide our first look into NFL players and teams as we prepare for the upcoming fantasy football season. Information will now begin to flood our social media timelines, leaving us to determine the subsequent fantasy impact. It’s a matter of knowing which information matters, and which should be ignored.

So each day in this space, we’ll take a trip through the top news and takeaways around the league’s training camps to offer up what fantasy managers need to know as we head through draft season and into the 2024 NFL regular season.

Today, let’s review the major news as we start from Monday into Tuesday.

QB Justin Herbert Returning to Practice

The franchise QB practiced for the first time since July 31. He had been in a walking boot for two weeks.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said the return of Herbert led to the “voice of angels” ringing in his ears. Herbert went 11-of-12 in his 7-on-7 drill in a return to practice. But the players he completed the passes to are a reminder of how much this offense has changed: Cornelius Johnson, Luke Benson, Donald Parham Jr. and Stone Smartt.

It’s great news that Herbert was able to return to practice after only missing two or three weeks. But he’s not launching into top-10 fantasy QB land as a result. The lack of weapons is still a concern.

TE Mark Andrews Still Not Practicing

Andrews was involved in a car crash last week and is still not practicing. The team says it’s just minor and no cause for concern, but still a situation for fantasy managers to monitor.

QB Jayden Daniels Named Starter for Commanders

It’s not a surprise, but Daniels has earned the starting job in Washington.

Daniels has been solid so far this preseason, completing 12-of-15 passes for 123 yards. He added a rushing touchdown, further illustrating his fantasy allure. Daniels is being drafted as a tail-end fantasy QB1, and while he was always expected to be the starter, the official word locks him into that draft range.

WR Christian Kirk Not Practicing This Week with Calf Injury

The Jags announced Kirk would be held out of practice this week nursing a calf injury. He missed last week as well. The team previously described the injury as “mild” so perhaps they are being extra precautious with their WR1. But knowing he’ll already be out all week is not the news we were hoping for to start the week.
