The Los Angeles Chargers face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 after a battle with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Will this matchup live to the hype or being a low-paced battle like Week 2 for the Chargers? Kansas City, coming off of a crushing Sunday night loss, are favored by -7.5 via the oddsmakers.

Opening odds – Chargers-Chiefs

In what is expected to be a high-scoring game, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Los Angeles Chargers after a disappointing loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Being tagged as the favorites in Week 2, the Chiefs are now favored slightly more than a touchdown versus the Chargers. In a low-scoring affair, the Chargers weren’t able to cover the spread against Dallas Cowboys, but they hope to bounce back this week.

Quarterback analysis – Justin Herbert vs. Patrick Mahomes

Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers weren’t as productive in Week 2 in a game many thought would be a shootout. Herbert threw for 338 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. While the interceptions aren’t on the positive side, the connection between the young quarterback and Keenan Allen continues to grow. Herbert gets put into another situation where he should have the opportunity to throw and go toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense.

What is there to say about Mahomes that hasn’t already been said? He put on another throwing clinic in Week 2, as he threw for 343 yards with three touchdowns while spreading out the love to nine different targets. Mahomes has now thrown for six touchdowns and 680 yards in the first two games of the season.

Latest Chargers betting news & info

The Chargers are filled with hope and improvement as last season didn’t end the way they would have hoped for. They finished third in the AFC West, going 7-9 on the season. The positive side of that is they were 9-7 ATS while also going 9-7 in the O/U category. As Herbert becomes more comfortable in the Chargers’ system and with the weapons surrounding him, there is a good upside for this team overall.

For this season, it has been a mixed result with the first two games of the season. The Chargers were able to cover the spread Week 1 but failed Week 2 as -3 favorites against the Cowboys. While this offense has been more productive in the past, it is now ranked 26th in the league, averaging just 18.5 points per game so far. The yardage total is one of the best in the league currently as they total 416 yards per game and rank fifth overall. If the run game can improve, this team can be very productive.

Latest Chiefs betting news & info

While the Kansas City Chiefs finished at the top of the AFC West standings last season at 14-2, they went 7-9 ATS and 8-8 in the O/U category — not the results you expect from a top team in the NFL. However, this season has not been as kind to them as they are now 0-2 ATS but 2-0 when it comes to the over in total points. This may be another game which comes down to the final drive for the Chiefs to cover.

There is one thing that the Chiefs do, and that is be consistent with Mahomes under center. They are third in total points so far this year, averaging 34 per game. The offense is powered behind the throwing of Mahomes as they are averaging 333.5 yards per game, but just like the Chargers, they lack in the run game and it’s bad. They are averaging just 67.5 yards per game and there really is no promise that Clyde Edwards-Helaire or Darrel Williams can improve that as of right now.

Chargers vs. Chiefs betting picks – NFL Week 3

If we’re sticking with trends, then going after the spread of the Chargers is the route to go. I do believe Herbert and the Chargers will be able to compete with the Chiefs, as their defense is struggling. I think this is a game where Andy Reid does not take his foot off the gas pedal. Mahomes will be spreading out the love and keeping this game out of reach. For the total points, I still think the two teams keep this game on the under. The Chargers have not been able to produce the points and while the Chiefs are one of the best at that, 55.5 is a big uphill battle to reach.

Here are our betting picks for Chargers vs. Chiefs in Week 3.
