After transferring from Arizona State, Johnny Wilson exploded for nearly 900 yards and five scores for the Seminoles in 2022, bringing his name to the front end of the 2024 class. Unfortunately for Wilson, injuries and the addition of Keon Coleman combined to give him struggles in 2023, and he only managed 617 yards and two scores.

Wilson stands an imposing 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, giving him a huge advantage in most matchups. This lengthy frame makes him an ideal red-zone target despite not posting huge touchdown numbers throughout his career. It also comes in handy during contested situations or when throws are off target as well. He generally displays strong hands as well in these situations but has struggled to hold onto the ball through contact, whether it’s a defender or the ground creating the contact. When asked to display plus body control along the sidelines or in tough catch situations, he has easily succeeded.

Due to his height and length, he is not the most sudden athlete but displays good fluidity within his movements while weaponizing his leverage and frame to create separation. Wilson’s ability to identify and settle into vacated zones is above average making up for his lack of separation in one-on-one situations. His ability to track the ball downfield paired with his long stride creates an advantage resulting in multiple big plays. In addition, his solid stutter release and quick acceleration help him stack defensive backs easily, but he could use a more expansive package. His lack of suddness transfers over to after the catch where he struggles to create a ton of production but offers enough to be viable in the screen or short passing game.

Johnny Wilson left me wanting a lot more this year, which is how I feel he will be as a fantasy asset at the NFL level. Even with plus athleticism for his size he is not the best separator or redzone target–even though he should be. These flaws could hurt him at the NFL level if not improved, pairing these with a lack of YAC and Wilson doesn’t scream premier fantasy asset. He likely becomes an effective WR4 with some boom weeks sprinkled in for fantasy managers.
