NBA Summer League DFS Plays (Thursday 7/18)

NBA Summer League rolls on! Even though we’re now past the halfway point, I’ll still include my warnings about how this tournament works. First, the rules are different. For our purposes, the three most important rule changes are that the games are 40 minutes instead of 48, players get 10 personal fouls instead of six, and it takes 10 team fouls in one quarter for a team to reach the bonus rather than five.

Secondly, and most important for any potential newbies, information regarding inactive players and starting lineups is going to be a lot less readily available than you’re used to during NBA DFS. Of course, there isn’t as much beat writer coverage for Summer League (although it’s increasing year over year), but the AAU style schedule is really what complicates things. This tournament takes place in two gyms in Las Vegas and with so many games each day, most games after the first two of each slate will tip off well after that game’s scheduled lock time. The later in a slate a game is scheduled, the less likely it is that we will be able to find starting lineups. On the flip side, when that news does come, we can gain an incredible advantage.

The last thing I will caution against before we dive into the seventh main slate of the event is that you will get burned by late news if you play DFS and props throughout the tournament. We’ve already seen a number of high-profile players shut down for some of these teams. We will have to be extra vigilant and shout out to all the FTN subscribers who have been contributing to our news search in the Discord over the past week. There has not been a Summer League where at least one of my main slate builds was tarnished by late news. But if we continue stay vigilant as a group in the discord and comb Twitter for those sweet, sweet news morsels, we will have a productive tournament! Keep that in mind as we move through the ups and downs of these glorious 10 days.

Summer League Notes – Day 7

Washington Wizards

We begin our main slate Thursday with all eyes on second overall pick Alex Sarr ($8.7k), who went 0-for-15 from the field Tuesday night and surely will be active in this one to try to bounce back. Ending his Summer League on that note feels like malpractice. With the amount of value we should have on this slate seven days into the event, I actually think he makes a lot of sense as a spend up option. Compared to our average main slate this week, center has more options than we’ve been used to. That combined with his dismal shooting performance last game should keep the ownership down. Sarr scored 22.25 DK points Tuesday while going 0-for-15, I think he’s got plenty of upside to justify getting over the field.

We should get lineups from this game as there’s an extra half hour buffer between the first game on this court today and this one. So, we’ll likely be able to sort out who is in and who is out for the Wiz. Last time out, Tristan Vukcevic ($5k), Eugene Omoruyi ($4k), Johnny Davis ($5.2k) and Jared Butler ($4.3k) all took a seat, while Pat Baldwin Jr. ($5.2k) played his first game of the week. I expect another group of players to rest — some could be from that list, and some could be those who have played every game like Bub Carrington ($7.9k) and Justin Champagnie ($6.1k). Stay tuned to the NBA DFS Discord channel this evening for more discussion on how I’m prioritizing these plays once we know who is active.

And because it can be important context at this point of the week, the Wizards are out of contention for Monday’s title game with a record of 1-2 thus far.
