Strike Package
MLB Counter = 51.9% of the season complete
Well folks, we’re halfway home (actually just about 52% based on games played), so this week let’s turn to a Main Event focus – starting pitchers. We all realize that starting pitchers impact four of the 10 rotisserie scoring categories – Wins, Strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. But I submit to you, dear reader, that two of those four categories are a bit, shall we say, mercurial (that’s a fancy word for you just can’t predict them too well). But in this 855-team contest, they do affect scoring in a very reliable way in the two others. So I’m tabbing those two more reliable categories, Strikeouts and WHIP, as the Strike Package, because a quality starter gives you plenty of firepower..
Below you can see the top-15 strikeout pitchers through June 29. But the table below isn’t sorted by strikeouts. It combines strikeouts and WHIP according to the formula strikeouts plus two minus WHIP to get approximately equal weighting for each in a total score. In this way, a pitcher with a high strikeout total but a high WHIP would not be ranked at the top of the chart. The top score for the season thus far is Tyler Glasnow, who grades out at a 244, with the No. 1 strikeout total and an impressive WHIP. However, Michael King, who has a solid 115 strikeouts, only gets a 188 because his 1.27 WHIP drags him down to 14th (admittedly, all 15 of these players are great assets to have in fantasy). Similarly, Cole Ragans has the fourth-highest strikeout total (120), but his score of 203 is only 10th due to his higher WHIP. Alternatively, Logan Gilbert’s outstanding WHIP makes up for a slightly lower strikeout total – he is 8th with a 214 despite only 102 K’s this season.
Strikeout Leaders Ranked by K’s and WHIP (season):

Well, what about the last 30 days, you ask? (Well, nobody asked, but here it is anyway.) There are some familiar names below but with some new additions. Over the last month, Tanner Bibee has been outstanding (as you can see below) with the highest strikeout total and a tremendous 0.84 WHIP. Who are the other strong June performers? Hunter Brown, who started out very poorly, is 4th; Justin Steele, who can’t buy a win, is 9th; Paul Skenes is 10th, and look at Chris Bassitt – he is 15th (Again, this list is first created from the top 15 strikeout totals and then adding in the WHIP. It would not be the same if I ranked all starting pitchers).

NFBC Main Event FAAB #15: A Surge in Spending
In FAAB #15 on June 30, spending spiked. The top-10 widest acquisitions this week are in the chart below, and it was a festival for Main Event owners (see below) as David Festa (who was added in all 57 leagues) led the way. It actually seemed like this festival was Christmas themed (more on this later), as Jhonkensy Noel was next, picked up in 56 leagues. Then another Noel(vi) – third baseman Noelvi Marte (CIN) – returned from his suspension, and he was added in 51 leagues, before we broke the Christmas trend with Davis Daniel (LAA) who found his way onto 50 Main Event rosters. Among the widest 10 pickups, Marte held the highest average winning bid at about $271. Festa (MIN) came next at approximately $47, and Noel checked in at about $41. Luis Matos (SF) and Xander Bogaerts (SD) were in the $20-29 range, and everyone else was below $20. Only three additional players (outside the widest adds) were picked up in more than five leagues and attracted relatively high $30+ average winning bids. They were Colton Cowser (average of $62 from 5 bids), Heston Kjerstad (average of $76 from 15 bids) and Jake Meyers (average $38 from 5).

Winning Bids over $100 and $200
I’m also keeping tabs on players attracting the highest individual FAAB bids. In the 15th run on June 30 (see below), there were 46, the largest number since May 5, $200-plus successful bids. In addition, there were 23 more winning bids between $100-199. In the seven previous FAAB runs from May 12 through June 23, there were only 36 winning bids over $200. This week, the 46 winning bids over $200 were driven by Noelvi Marte, who attracted one bid over $500, two $400-499; 18 $300-399 and 20 $200-299. Ten more Main Event owners won Noelvi for less than $200, with the lowest successful bid totaling $128. The other $200+ winning bids were for Michael Harris ($313), Mike Trout ($281), George Springer ($273), Nolan Arenado ($252), and Christian Scott ($207).

The Wow Bid of the Week: The First Noel(vi)
The highest overall bid in FAAB Week 15 – you might have already guessed – was for Noelvi Marte of the Reds, who dominated the proceedings in a Christmas spirit, along with his kindred spirit, Jhonkensy Noel (who was also picked up this week). Marte was unowned in 46 Main Event leagues, and is now (of course) 100% rostered. It was the third-highest Wow bid out of the 15 registered so far in 2024, which easily beat out the unsuccessful runner-up bid of $136.
The Wow Bids of 2024
- 3/24: Nolan Schanuel $200 (#15)
- 3/31: Jason Foley $479 (#4)
- 4/7: James McArthur $225 (#14)
- 4/14 Brandon Nimmo $578 (#2)
- 4/21 Wilyer Abreu $350 (#10)
- 4/28 Pete Crow-Armstrong $355 (#9)
- 5/5 Christian Scott $677 (Highest)
- 5/12 Taj Bradley $444 (#5)
- 519 Reed Garrett $420 (#6)
- 5/26 Wyatt Langford $248 (#13)
- 6/2 Ben Brown $366 (#7)
- 6/9 Blake Snell $360 (#8)
- 6/16 Ryne Stanek $261 (#12)
- 6/23 Michael Harris $281 (#11)
- 6/30 Noelvi Marte $509 (#3)
FAAB Summary: Noelvi Leads the Way
In the 15th FAAB week, Main Event owners successfully made 1,755 winning bids (about 6% less than last week) but the Noelvi Marte bids made the overall spending surge. Because of this, Main Event owners have now spent exactly $674 of their $1,000 allocation. However, even with this week’s spending, the overall FAAB that has left Main Event owners’ wallets remains significantly lower than the last three years at the 15-week mark. In contrast, the three previous years (as you can see below) were well over $700 spent. This year’s Week 15 had spending of about $47 per team, significantly more than the previous three years (all three previous years were within $17-$29 spent in Week 15). But there is still more money available in the Main Event – much more than in the previous three years. Since Main Event owners are still able to aggressively bid (still about $27 left to spend per week), you should anticipate other higher spending in the weeks to come.
Total Spent: Main Event Through 14 FAAB Periods
- 2024: $674
- 2023: $823
- 2022: $747
- 2021: $732

Four Widest ME Pickups from 3 weeks ago | LGS Added | First three weeks stats after wide pickup |
Jack Suwinski | 47 | .139 BA 1 HR 0 SB (6/5 R:RBI) |

Spencer Horwitz | 40 | .333 BA 2 HR 0 SB (9/6 R:RBI) |
Justyn-Henry Malloy | 36 | .170 BA 2 HR 0 SB (5/5 R:RBI) |
Each week during the season, I’ll take a look at the four widest Main Event pickups from three weeks ago and evaluate whether it was a good addition based on the early stats (thumbs up), a bad idea (thumbs down) or simply a push. We’re focusing on the first three weeks after the pickup, when players can earn their new owners some good stats (as they are generally in the active lineup) or underperform badly, leading to an angry drop soon after they are added to the roster.
Three weeks ago, we had our 12th FAAB run, and we had two fairly good pickups. Cade Povich (see above) produced some nice ratio stats, is still in the rotation and has a good K:BB ratio plus one win. In a 15-teamer, that’s a good addition. Spencer Horwitz gets a thumbs up as well, with a fine batting average and some decent counting stats. Unfortunately, there were two wide pickups that did not deliver. Jack Suwinski still hasn’t gotten out of his funk and has hit just .139 over the three weeks. Justyn-Henry Malloy did provide two homers (including an inside-the-park homer Sunday), but his .170 average doesn’t cut it for our purposes. That’s two thumbs up and two thumbs down this week.
The two thumbs up week keeps the Main Event pickup record for 2024 at a good level, with 20 thumbs up (42%), 21 thumbs down and seven pushes, and the thumbs up percentage is about equal to 2023 (44%). This is about the same neighborhood as the 2022 good pickups mark of 39% but better than 2021, which was 24%.

Overall Leaderboard: Schroter Won’t Gloat(er)
Unlike the gentleman above, Glenn Schroter refuses to gloat over his dominating performance in the Main Event this year. Instead, the 2015 overall Main Event champ is focused on his vow after his initial win that he would “win every 10 years.” However, he is planning on “rubbing it in” in early October (see my reaction above) when this contest goes final. I’m not sure I am looking forward to that…

14 | 7/1 | Glenn Schroter | 7429.5 | 28.0 | 1st |
So I am contractually obligated to point out that even though Glenn Schroter leads for the eighth time out of the last 10 weeks, his margin is the smallest it has ever been – a slim 28.0 points. This is giving some hope to his nearest rivals, led by the fresher Eric Drescher, who famously took a short respite from the competition and now is moving ever closer to the top of the leaderboard. Beck’s beer proponent Robert Beckman is surging as well, now third overall (he was sixth last week), and Clark the Shark Olson is currently circling in prime position in fourth place. However, The Liberator, Bradley Libros, is solidly in fifth and claims he will still liberate the masses of downtrodden Main Event owners (and he also has a Main Event team ranked #31 overall). Real Neil Petersen sits in sixth, charging all the way from 13th last week, and the impressive Knute Rockne aficionado Nicholi Knutson is the last player above 7,000 overall points, although he dropped back slightly from fifth place last week.
Then there’s the Amazin’ Jason Santeiu, who not only is in eighth place this week, but he also has – get this – the 10th and 17th ranked overall teams. C’mon Jason, let someone else have some fun! The very tough guy to get rid of, Dave Rhydderch, sits in ninth, Marvelous Peter Marrero is now 11th (17th last week) and the magnanimous Brian Magnani is 12th (down one spot from 11th).
Chris (UR A Monster) Uram is 13th, Jackson The Price is Right is 14th and FTN Fantasy stalwart Jason Anthony is 15th. Everyone’s favorite winery king, Chris Boudreaux, is 16th, My Favorite Martin, Gregg Martin, is holed up in 19th and the Pull Hitter Robert DiPietro is in solid position in 20th.
A few other notables in the top 31 (the top 31 are paid an overall prize at the end of the season – see below table) – Alan Mitchell is 21st and 29th, Drummer Griffin Benger is 22nd, 2022 Main Event Overall Champ Robert Cramutola is 23rd, the one true King Brandon King is 24th and man at the cliff’s edge Kyle Brinkmann is 26th.
But all 31 of these fantasy managers are in the hunt for sure, and in a big 855-team contest like the Main Event, that’s all you can ask after a couple of months. We’re past the halfway mark of the season (51.9%), but there’s still plenty of games to be played before October.
