St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said prior to Friday's game against the visiting Washington Nationals that infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist, ankle) is expected to return to the Double-A Springfield lineup as a designated hitter on Saturday. Edman's minor-league rehab stint was recently interrupted by lingering pain with a sprained right ankle, and there is no timetable on when he will play in the field for the first time. The 29-year-old former Gold Glover has yet to play for the Cardinals this season after having surgery on his right wrist in October, but he should be able to make his 2024 regular-season debut in St. Louis at some point in early August if all goes well. In six games this season with Springfield, Edman has gone 6-for-20 (.300) with a double, four RBI, five strikeouts, and four walks. He's worth stashing for fantasy managers looking for speed, as Edman stole 27 bases in 137 games last year.
St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that with the minor leagues shut down during this week's All-Star break, outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) will need to continue his minor-league rehab assignment to begin the second half of the season. Mozeliak also said that the team wants to see Edman be able to play second base, shortstop and center field and get his timing down at the plate before they activate him from the 60-day injured list. In other words, the 29-year-old isn't exactly close to making his 2024 debut and may have to wait until early August for that. Fantasy managers that have been holding Edman all year have to be frustrated by the fact that he missed the entire first half of the season after having offseason wrist surgery. When he does eventually return, Edman will be worth rostering in all fantasy formats and should play regularly between while bouncing around as a super-utility player for the Cards.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) was scratched from the lineup for Double-A Springfield on Wednesday due to "general soreness" after playing in his first minor-league rehab game on Tuesday. It's not really clear if this is an actual setback with his surgically repaired right wrist, or if it's just normal soreness after having not played in a game all year until Tuesday. Either way, the Cardinals are going to take things slow with the 29-year-old, and he's unlikely to join the Cardinals big-league roster for the start of the second half of the season after next week's All-Star break to make his 2024 debut. However, barring a real setback with his wrist, Edman figures to rejoin the Cardinals as their regular center fielder by the end of July.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist, ankle) is in St Louis and has been taking swings. The Cardinals would like to get him in a live batting practice and then send him out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Edman sprained an ankle on June 24 while fielding ground balls, briefly pausing his rehab from offseason right wrist surgery, but he's on the cusp of finally being cleared for game action. With a good chance of getting reinstated to the major-league roster shortly after the All-Star break in mid-July, Edman is someone to look for on fantasy waiver wires for rosters in need of speed. Last year, the 29-year-old switch-hitter tallied 25 doubles, 69 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases over 479 at-bats for the Cards.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (ankle, wrist) sprained his ankle while fielding ground balls on Tuesday, according to manager Oliver Marmol. Edman's wrist rehab will now be put on hold while the severity of his ankle sprain is determined. It's yet another setback in what has been a frustrating year for Edman and his fantasy managers, as he has yet to play at all in 2024. It's especially frustrating for the 29-year-old after he had made some real strides in his recovery from right-wrist surgery. It's unclear how long his rehab will be put on hold, but hopefully Edman can still start a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later. At this point, we probably won't see Edman until the second half of the season, but he should be a lineup regular for the Red Birds when he's finally cleared to make his 2024 debut.
