The St. Louis Cardinals are calling up outfielder Jordan Walker from Triple-A Memphis ahead of Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Walker has been red-hot at the plate in the month of August, hitting .349 with three home runs, two doubles, one triple, and five RBI. With Matt Carpenter (back) landing on the 10-day injured list, the Cardinals decided to call up their former No. 1 prospect on Monday. The 22-year-old struggled offensively in the majors this season, as he hit just .155 with four doubles and four RBI across 20 games. But the potential is there for him to break out following his strong numbers recently at Triple-A. He's worth an add in some 12-plus team leagues, given his upside in this St. Louis offense. Walker hit .276 with 16 HRs and 51 RBI across 117 games with the Cardinals in 2023.UPDATE: Walker is starting in right field and batting seventh on Monday against Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker posted another multi-hit performance on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. This was his second straight game, tallying multiple hits and going deep. Since the start of the month, the 22-year-old has held a strong .349/.404/.674 line with 15 total hits, three doubles, three round-trippers, five RBI, and a 4:9 BB:K ratio. Since moving down to Triple-A, Walker has posted a .257 AVG, but his recent hot stretch could suggest he is turning the corner. Walker has struggled in the big leagues throughout his young career but could get another opportunity late in the summer if he continues to develop at Triple-A.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker currently has a .686 OPS in 53 games at Triple-A Memphis and is not even in the conversation for a promotion back to the big leagues after he was sent back to the farm at the end of April. The 22-year-old formers 21st overall pick in 2020 hit just .155 (9-for-58) with no home runs, four RBI and 18 strikeouts in 67 plate appearances in 20 games to begin the year before being demoted. Fantasy managers that were expecting a step forward in 2024 after he hit .276/.342/.445 with 16 homers, 51 RBI and seven stolen bases in 117 games in his rookie season in 2023 have been sorely disappointed. Lars Nootbaar returned from his latest injury on Monday and Tommy Edman (wrist) could be back early in the second half, which will make it even more difficult for Walker to get back in the mix in St. Louis.
St. Louis Cardinals third base/outfield prospect Jordan Walker finally hit a home run for the Memphis Red Birds over the weekend. Walker was demoted from the big-league squad on April 24 after struggling and showing no power. Although it took over 100 at-bats, Walker went yard on Saturday. Although he is hitting a respectable .266 in 109 at-bats, his light tower power that he has displayed in the past hasn't shown up. Despite his decline in power, Walker, 22, had a solid rookie campaign in 2023 and managers should remain patient as he has some of the best power of anyone in the minor leagues. The hope is that Walker can carry this power momentum and that could lead to an eventual return to the big-league squad. For now, managers in dynasty leagues should remain patient with the young slugger, while redraft managers should scout Walker's progress.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker has been optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. The former 21st overall pick in 2020 will head to the farm after opening the 2024 campaign with a weak .155/.239/.259 slash line with no home runs, four RBI, six walks and 18 strikeouts in 67 plate appearances over 20 games for the Red Birds. The 21-year-old will surely be back in St. Louis at some point, but he's going to need to work on some things in the minors first. Brendan Donovan is in left field and hitting leadoff on Wednesday, while rookie Michael Siani is in center field and batting ninth against Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery. With Walker now in the minors, Alec Burleson and Ivan Herrera could see some more playing time in the outfield moving forward.
