Catcher Gary Sanchez has not reported to spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers this week, and there's no expectation right now as to when/if a deal will officially get done. The Brewers are not commenting on the matter, so the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak is guessing that negotiations/examinations are ongoing. The 31-year-old reportedly inked a one-year, $7 million deal, but it hasn't become official just yet. If he does eventually sign, Sanchez is expected to see at-bats at designated hitter and as the backup behind the dish to William Contreras. The Dominican slugger surprised with the Padres in 2023 and had 19 home runs and 46 RBI in 72 games while hitting just .218 (51-for-234). Sanchez isn't going to hit for average, but he won't be a bad source of power as a No. 2 backstop in two-catcher leagues.
Free-agent catcher Gary Sanchez signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Sanchez began last year with the New York Mets but only played in three games with them before eventually being picked up by the San Diego Padres, where he thrived in 72 games, clubbing 19 home runs and driving in 46 runs in 260 plate appearances. However, it also came with a weak .218 batting average (51-for-234). The 31-year-old veteran backstop was particularly effective against left-handed pitching in 2023 and should at least be in play as Milwaukee's designated hitter against southpaws in 2024, in addition to providing the team with a backup catching option to starter William Contreras. Sanchez can provide some pop in two-catcher leagues, but fantasy managers wouldn't be wise to expect a repeat of last year.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are among the teams considering ex-New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who had a fantastic year with the San Diego Padres in 2023 while become left-hander Blake Snell's personal catcher. The Pirates are expected to move Henry Davis to full-time catching duties in 2024, but maybe they'd like some insurance behind him in Sanchez. The 31-year-old backstop produced a .780 OPS -- his best mark since 2019 -- and hit 19 home runs in 75 games after joining the Padres midseason. He was somewhat of an offensive savior for a Padres All-Star lineup that fell flat. Sanchez hit only .217 but squared the ball up often and should at least be able to land a role somewhere in a timeshare at the catching position. Expecting a repeat of 2023 would be foolish, but Sanchez could land a timeshare role somewhere and be useful as a No. 2 catcher in fantasy for his power.
The San Diego Padres have considered re-signing catcher Gary Sanchez, but there is a big gap in contract talks. Sanchez kept the Padres' offense afloat in the middle of last season and was one of their biggest offensive contributors despite not even starting the year with the club. Despite the strong season for the Friars, the Padres were fully expected to move on from Sanchez heading into 2024, especially after they acquired Kyle Higashioka from the New York Yankees in the blockbuster deal involving outfielder Juan Soto. If he can stay healthy, Luis Campusano has a clear path to regular catching duties this season. Sanchez hit 19 home runs and had a .780 OPS in just 75 games in 2023 but finished the season on the injured list due to a fractured wrist. He'll most likely be looking at a part-time role in 2024 with whichever team signs him.
