Ricky Tiedemann Scratched With Left-Hamstring Tightness

Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (hamstring) has been scratched as the starter for Saturday's Grapefruit League opener against the Philadelphia Phillies due to left-hamstring tightness. The team doesn't think the injury is serious, but manager John Schneider said he'll have a better idea on Saturday. The Blue Jays aren't going to pitch one of the best pitching prospects in the game -- MLB Pipeline has him ranked as the No. 29 overall prospect -- especially after Tiedemann missed 10 weeks in 2023 with a biceps injury. The 21-year-old southpaw has some of the best stuff of any pitching prospect, but he's probably more likely to begin the season at Triple-A Buffalo, and Toronto will almost certainly keep him on a strict innings limit once he reaches the big leagues. Temper expectations in single-year fantasy leagues in 2024.

Marco Luciano Dealing With Hamstring Issue

San Francisco Giants shortstop Marco Luciano (hamstring) is dealing with a minor hamstring issue, but if he comes out of Friday's workout fine, he will be in the Cactus League lineup on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. It's something to keep an eye on early in spring training, but it doesn't sound like anything too serious. The 22-year-old is projected to serve as San Francisco's starting shortstop in 2024, taking over for Brandon Crawford. The Dominican infielder made his big-league debut last year and played in only 14 games, going 9-for-39 (.231) with no home runs, no RBI and 17 strikeouts. Right now, Luciano's glove is ahead of his bat, and if he struggles mightily in his first full year in the majors, the Giants may be forced to send him to the bench or back to the minors.

Jung Hoo Lee Out With Side Soreness

San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee (side) is dealing with some minor side soreness and will not be in the team's Cactus League game on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs as a precaution. Lee's injury isn't very serious, and he expects to be ready to play in spring games in a couple of days. However, this is something to watch for the 25-year-old as he transitions to the States in 2024. He should still be expected to be San Francisco's starting center fielder and leadoff man when Opening Day comes around late in March after the Giants signed him to a six-year, $113 million deal this winter. The Korean outfielder comes with very little power, but his elite contact skills should make him a batting-average asset atop the Giants' lineup.

Sal Frelick To Play Third Base In Spring Opener

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick will bat leadoff and play third base in the team's Cactus League opener on Saturday against the San Diego Padres. Given all of the outfield depth that Milwaukee has at the big-league level, the Brewers have had Frelick working out on the infield in camp, and they are going to throw him in there at the hot corner right away to kick things off this weekend. The 23-year-old is an exceptional athlete, but it would still be a bit of a stretch to think that he'll play regularly on the dirt for the Brew Crew in 2024. Frelick hit .246 (47-for-191) with three homers, 24 RBI and seven stolen bases in his first 57 major-league games last year. The former first-rounder takes his walks and doesn't strike out much, giving him upside as an average and runs contributor atop Milwaukee's lineup.

Vinnie Pasquantino Starting Cactus League Opener

Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino (shoulder) is playing first base and batting second in the team's Cactus League opener on Friday versus the Texas Rangers. It's good news after Pasquantino had season-ending shoulder surgery last June. The power-hitting left-hander played in only 61 games in his second year in the majors due to his shoulder injury and went 57-for-231 (.247) with nine home runs, 26 RBI and 24 runs scored after hitting .295/.383/.450 with an .832 OPS, 10 home runs and 26 RBI in 72 games in his rookie campaign in 2022. He was a disappointment up until his injury last year, but when healthy, Pasquantino has the ability to be a four-category producer for fantasy managers, albeit without much protection around him in Kansas City.
