Cam Collier Dealing With Thumb Injury

Cincinnati Reds third base prospect Cam Collier (thumb) is dealing with a thumb injury and could miss some time. Collier was reassigned to minor-league camp earlier this week. The infielder suffered this injury on a tag play during spring training. Collier is considered one of the top prospects in the Cincinnati system. The Reds drafted the 20-year-old with the 18th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Last season, Collier made his High-A debut and posted a .248/.355/.443 slash line with 21 doubles and 20 home runs. He swiped two bags and held a 66:127 BB:K ratio. The previous season, Collier logged 111 games at Single-A and posted a .246/.349/.356 line. When healthy, fantasy managers should expect Collier to push for an early-season Double-A debut.

Jaison Chourio Will Play In Spring Breakout Game

Cleveland Guardians outfield prospect Jaison Chourio (wrist) is set to play in the Spring Breakout game against the Seattle Mariners. Chourio suffered a season-ending wrist injury last August but appears to be at full strength during camp. Before his injury, Chourio was beginning to find his footing at the Single-A level. After tallying just seven hits through his first nine games at Single-A during the 2023 season, Chourio held a .269/.414/.398 slash line with 24 doubles across 98 games with Single-A Lynchburg last summer. He went deep five times and swiped an impressive 44 bags. The 19-year-old is considered one of the top prospects in the Cleveland system alongside infielder Travis Bazzana and outfielder Chase DeLauter (abdomen). Fantasy managers should expect Chourio to push for an early season High-A debut given his progression at Single-A last summer.

Ben Brown Still Being Stretched Out As A Starter

Chicago Cubs right-hander Ben Brown will continue to be stretched out as a starter in camp because the team knows he could be a big X-factor for their starting rotation, The Athletic's Patrick Mooney writes. It makes more sense for Brown to increase his workload in spring training and be available at the start of the year if the Cubs need another starter, rather than immediately turning him into a high-leverage reliever. It's always easier to move a pitcher to the bullpen later on than to try to ramp back up towards 100 pitches. If the 25-year-old is in a rotation spot for Chicago, the 6-foot-6 right-hander has plenty of fantasy upside with his swing-and-miss stuff, although the fact he still has a minor-league option remaining could make him the odd-man out. A neck injury limited him in 2024, but he also threw seven no-hit innings against the Brewers in May.

Nick Loftin Returns To Starting Lineup

Kansas City Royals infielder Nick Loftin (wrist) is returning to the starting lineup on Thursday evening to face the Chicago Cubs. Loftin will cover the hot corner and bat cleanup. The 26-year-old was scratched before Sunday's contest due to wrist soreness. However, seeing Loftin return to the starting nine relatively quickly suggests the injury is not very serious. Through his first taste of spring training, the Baylor product has been quite effective as he has gone 6-for-11 with three RBI. Loftin is currently competing for a depth role in the Kansas City infield. Last season, he held a .189/.282/.336 line across 57 games. If he does make the 40-man roster, he will only have value as a reserve option in AL-only leagues.

Matt Shaw Not Guaranteed To Be Ready For Tokyo Series

The Athletic's Patrick Mooney writes that Chicago Cubs third base prospect Matt Shaw (oblique) isn't guaranteed to be ready for the season-opening two-game series in Tokyo, Japan, on March 18 and 19 versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to team officials. Shaw entered spring training as the favorite to earn the third base job for the Cubbies, but then he suffered a setback in mid-February with oblique discomfort. He sat out the first 10 days of Cactus League action and has only nine plate appearances with only five days to go until the team leaves for Japan. Shaw has no major-league experience and isn't on the 40-man roster, so Chicago may proceed slowly with the young infielder. However, the good news for fantasy managers that already have Shaw in dynasty leagues is that the Cubs want him to win this competition and expect him to be their everyday third baseman for years to come. The former first-rounder has 25-25 potential.
