Patrick Bailey Resuming Baseball Activities

San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey (oblique) will resume baseball activities this weekend, according to the team. Barring a setback, Bailey will likely be back from the 10-day injured list before the end of August, which is why free-agent catcher Elias Diaz turned down the Giants as a possible destination. The Giants aren't guaranteeing a roster spot with Bailey expected to return sooner than later. Bailey is eligible to return from the IL on Aug. 29. The 25-year-old switch-hitting backstop was hitting a dreadful .057 (3-for-53) with a double, two RBI and 13 strikeouts in 15 games in the month of July before landing on the shelf. With better health, hopefully Bailey will be able to pick things up offensively in the final month of the season. Veteran Curt Casali is currently serving as the Giants' starter, with Andrew Knapp backing him up.

Mariners Place Yimi Garcia On 15-Day Injured List

The Seattle Mariners placed right-hander Yimi Garcia (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 20) on Friday with right-elbow inflammation and recalled left-hander Gabe Speier from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move. Garcia, 33, is 3-0 this year with five saves, 10 holds, a 3.46 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 49 strikeouts and 12 walks in 39 games with the Toronto Blue Jays and Mariners this year. All five of the Dominican's saves came with Toronto, though, and he's been serving as a late-inning setup man since being sent to Seattle at the trade deadline. In nine innings of work with the M's, he's allowed six earned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out seven. Perhaps Garcia's recent poor performance are directly tied to his elbow injury. For however, long Garcia is sidelined, Seattle will look for Collin Snider and Tayler Saucedo to step up in setup roles.

Xavier Edwards Exits Game Early With Lower Back Discomfort

Miami Marlins shortstop Xavier Edwards (back) was removed from Friday night's game against the Chicago Cubs with lower-back discomfort, the team announced. Edwards came out after the second inning and was replaced by Vidal Brujan. The 25-year-old hit a single and stole a base before being taken out. The switch hitter has been having a very solid year with the Marlins, hitting for a .345 BA and a 137 OPS+. As of now there's been no other comment on his status so Edwards should be considered day-to-day until otherwise stated. If Edwards is forced to miss any time the Marlins will certainly have a void at the top of the lineup as his strong contact hitting skills have made Miami a stingy underdog with him leading off. Vidal Brujan should be expected to pick up Edwards' playing time if Edwards is forced to miss much time. Brujan is not a viable fantasy option as his .278 wOBA is paired with an even worse .260 xwOBA. Fantasy managers should be able to find better options on their waiver wire.

Cedric Mullins Leaves Game Early With Left Quad Tightness

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins (quadriceps) exited Friday night's game against the Houston Astros early with left-quad tightness, according to the team. Mullins was replaced in the top of the fifth inning by Austin Slater after going 0-1 with a walk. The team has not said much else on his status and Mullins should be considered day-to-day until further notice. The lefty had been heating up over the last two weeks, hitting for a .960 OPS in his last 35 PA. Though mainly in a platoon role, his bat has been important for the Orioles as they attempt to keep pace with the New York Yankees in the AL East race. If Mullins is forced to miss time, expect Ryan O'Hearn to pick up more time in the outfield against righties. O'Hearn should make for a solid platoon matchup against righties for fantasy managers, hitting for a 127 OPS+ in 2024.

Alex Call Carted Off With Apparent Leg Injury

Washington Nationals outfielder Alex Call (leg) was carted off during Friday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. Call was charging in on a shallow fly ball and fell onto the ground after a non-contact injury during the bottom of the second inning. The 29-year-old wasn't able to stand on his foot and was hopping to get to the cart. Call was replaced by Joey Gallo in right field after the injury. The team hasn't stated the severity of his injury and until then he should be considered day-to-day, however it should be anticipated he will miss more time given this was a non-contact injury. The righty had been having a fantastic 2024 season, hitting for a 175 OPS+ in 98 AB with most of his playing time coming in August after spending most of the year in the minors. Jacob Young should be a likely replacement for Call in the outfield, though Young is not a viable fantasy option in any format at this time.
