Arizona Diamondbacks

A.J. Puk was placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation Saturday. He had an MRI Monday. The latest news is that he’s seeking multiple opinions. Puk could be facing a lengthy absence, if not a season-ending one.

On the field, Justin Martinez was not used in Arizona’s 3-2 11-inning win against the Cubs Sunday, despite two separate save opportunities arising, minimal usage (18 total pitches) in the four days before that game, and a scheduled day off Monday. When asked about it, manager Torey Lovullo said Martinez was fatigued from his workload. Throwing 100 mph will surely take its toll, but Martinez’ game logs don’t reflect an abnormally heavy workload. He’d had three or more days of rest between appearances four times and only worked in back-to-back games twice.

Absent his own injury, Martinez’ stock would rise significantly without his co-closer Puk around. If Martinez can’t handle a heavier workload, that would open up the occasional save chance for others. The most notable name at present is Shelby Miller, who has thus far thrown 10 scoreless innings and allowed only three runners on base. Miller is a solid addition as a lesser-known handcuff.
