Blown saves, committees, odd usage and a surprise demotion … and it’s only been four days. The first (short) week of the MLB season proved chaotic at the back end of many bullpens. Guys we thought were closers weren’t, and guys we never thought about at all were getting their teams’ saves. I’m here to try sorting it all out.
In these first few weeks of the Bullpen Report, I’m going to include a lot of daily game notes and information as hierarchies are set and managers settle into (hopefully) predictable patterns of bullpen deployment. Once most bullpens are well-established and the endgame innings start going as expected, I’ll scale back and make note of only the most relevant news, injuries and possible waiver wire opportunities.
For now, there’s a lot to digest here since I’m including every note I make for myself. It shows a bit of my process. I don’t make notes for blowout games or games when lesser middle relievers are the only ones used.
This article includes all games through Monday, March 31.
