Following a 100-loss campaign in 2022, the Reds aren’t projected to be much better in 2023. The offseason odds suggest that Cincinnati will be fighting to stay out of last place. The Reds rank 14th of 15 NL teams with +12500 odds to win the pennant. Cincinnati hasn’t been active enough in free agency to be considered a threat for a Wild Card spot. While the rest of the league combined to spend well north of $3 billion in contracts through the first month and a half of free agency, Cincinnati didn’t sign any players of note. The Reds’ only playoff appearance in the last decade came in the 60-game 2020 season when MLB temporarily expanded the postseason field to 14 teams.

If the Reds win the 2023 World Series, they’ll go down as one of the most unlikely champions in MLB history. Cincinnati is a +25000 longshot to win the World Series. Only the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics have worse title odds than the Reds. Cincinnati hasn’t been back to the World Series since sweeping Oakland in the 1990 Fall Classic. Considering that the Reds have an over/under win total of 64.5 at Caesars, finishing anywhere close to .500 might have to be viewed as a successful season in Cincinnati.

Caesars has yet to release odds for the 2023 MVP and Cy Young awards, but Ohio bettors can wager on which players will lead MLB in strikeouts and home runs. Hunter Greene has +2500 odds to be the strikeouts leader, giving him better odds than all but 10 pitchers. Greene set a record with 30 pitches at more than 101 mph in a game during his rookie season, during which he struck out 164 batters in 125.2 innings. Because no one on the Reds’ current roster even hit 15 home runs in 2022, they don’t have a player who is a real threat to lead the league next season. Joey Votto is a +50000 longshot to become the 2023 home run king.

That’s the longest drought in MLB history by seven years. Cincinnati made four World Series appearances and won two championships in the 1970s, but the days of the Big Red Machine are long gone.
