New York Mets @ Detroit Tigers

We’re heading back to Comerica Park Wednesday afternoon for Game 1 of a doubleheader between the Mets and Tigers. Once again, I’m going to keep this short, since this number is on the move. 

Joey Lucchesi has a 24.6% career K%. He’s currently sitting at 25.5% through two starts even after only throwing 44 big-league innings since 2020 thanks to injuries. The southpaw’s curveball has been one of his better punchout pitches throughout his career and the Tigers lead the majors in strikeouts against curveballs so far in 2023. Detroit carries the second-highest K% against left-handed pitchers this season at 30.3%. The Tigers also have one of the highest swinging-strike percentages in MLB and one of the lowest contact rates on pitches outside the strike zone. Overall their 75.2% contact rate is the 11th lowest in baseball this season.

Not sure how much longer we’ll see Lucchesi opening at 4.5 against strikeout-prone teams, but we’ll take it. I’m projecting Lucchesi to pitch about six innings and punchout five or six Tigers in this one. As always, check out FTN’s Prop Shop to grab the best number on the market.
