DVOA

A football metric to discover a player and team’s true value

What is DVOA?

DVOA is a method of evaluating teams, units, or players. It takes every single play during the NFL season and compares each one to a league-average baseline based on the situation. DVOA measures not just yardage, but yardage towards a first down: Five yards on third-and-4 are worth more than five yards on first-and-10 and much more than five yards on third-and-12. Performance is also adjusted for the quality of the opponent.

DVOA, originally developed by Aaron Schatz under “Football Outsiders,” has transitioned to FTN as its exclusive home (August of 2023).

Unlike traditional stats, DVOA accounts for situational context and opponent strength. This means a 5-yard gain on third-and-4 is valued more than the same gain on first-and-10, offering a precise measure of a team’s performance.

A positive DVOA indicates an offensive advantage, meaning the team performs better than average. Conversely, a negative DVOA suggests a defensive strength, as the team is better at preventing opponent success compared to the league average.

Yes, DVOA can evaluate individual players by comparing their performance on each play to the league average for their position in similar situations. This helps determine their efficiency and value over the average player.
